I think it is a good general rule to cite the most recent version of something (book chapters, reviews on a particular topic, etc). Unfortunately, what are students seem to be hearing is "avoid anything pre-2010."

I don't endorse date-based citation policies in any capacity, but it might become a coarse "rule" to follow, if you want to be considered a responsible scholar. The AI slop machine is moving too fast.

Yeah, the "old = bad" issue (which many grad students in my writing course have internalized) got me thinking about how scientists have unwritten rules about citation practices. I think avoiding AI slop will become a necessary part of those practices, and date-based conventions seem plausible.

You know how there's (annoying, imo) insistence that recent citations are better? Old papers can be refuted, which should be addressed, but old is not automatically bad.

I predict that some day you will only be able to cite papers pre-2025 due to AI slop. Even legit papers post-2024 will be sus.
