Can't remember if I shared this here, but here's the first 2 minutes of Stranger & The Strange, my weird west animated short I'm working on in my off hours.

Yeah I'm not sure how Kojima's teams managed this in the Fox Engine and then now as well.

PT and MGSV both still look amazing.

Hell MGS4 still looks pretty good.

I, for one, would not claim that as definitively true. I honestly just don't know anywhere near enough about the psychology.

But it certainly SEEMS true.
stephank.bsky.social
One could argue that people who are so sexually repressed as to make an app to DEMAND you not see a boob are more likely to snap and do something fucked up than people with a healthy relationship with their sexuality.

One could argue that.

JFC. Ron DeHaas, founder of the Christian antiporn app Covenant Eyes, has stepped down from NCOSE after his 38-year old son was charged with sexual abuse of a child.

Covenant Eyes is the app used by House Speaker Mike Johnson and his son to monitor each other's internet behavior.

Sorry, I get so grumpy about this.

Sticking to the "right" way of doing things all the time is a great way to portray yourself as a filmmaker with no personality.
stephank.bsky.social
You're not improving the frame by introducing extra detail for people to be distracted by!

In animation sometimes people INTENTIONALLY blow out windows and highlights in general to make a scene feel more grounded in reality, like a physical camera is filming it.
stephank.bsky.social
When I see people claiming that windows should NEVER be blown out, I just want to scream "WHY?"

What the fuck is outside that window that NEEDS to be seen in this moment?

If the answer is "nothing" then just focus on the goddamn scene! That's unnecessary visual information!
stephank.bsky.social
This is also what bugs me about so much cinematography advice on YouTube being focused on producing commercials.

Yes, that's a more solid business plan than making films. But it's not the 90s. Corporations don't want personality, they want you make their product look impressive.

It's so sterile.
stephank.bsky.social
I feel like in a world where a crisp, clean image with perfect lighting is the norm we now collectively kinda realize that supposed "perfection" is boring.

We don't need it. We want things to be a little messy. That's what makes it feel real and tangible.
stephank.bsky.social
Tbh I think a huge reason why film looks so much better to a lot of people than digital is simply that film forces you to live with and adapt to imperfections.

And the answer to that in digital filmmaking is to artfully INTRODUCE imperfections rather than compose the perfect image.
stephank.bsky.social
Yeah, that's sick work.
Props to whomever designed it!
stephank.bsky.social
But if your punchline relies on people going "you can't say that" you should stop and ask yourself "why?"

And then decide if breaking that social taboo says something you're okay with saying.

I think a lot of people skip that step.
stephank.bsky.social
Btw there's nothing inherently wrong with "edgy" humor, but there's also no inherent value in it.

It's not really a goal to aim for. It's just one of many kinds of punchlines.
stephank.bsky.social
It's honestly wild the comedic poison Millenials were raised on.

So much of it was just "can we make people upset at the things we say?"

There's a reason we don't talk about most of it anymore.

Found this on the AO3 subreddit, and I'm about to let it change my whole life (or at least work really hard to internalize it wrt my writing).
Someone's screenshot of a two-post twitter thread, from user blue (@bluewmist):

the fastest way to kill motivation is to make your identity depend on the outcome. it's called ego involvement. when failing becomes failing as a person, your brain starts avoiding the whole thing. not because you don't care, but because you care too much.

you don't need lower standards. you need less self-worth tangled up in your goals. the work gets easier when it's not about proving who you are.

But when I wake up I can FINALLY just fucking edit the video.

I spent 12+ hours trying to figure out why my timeline was freezing up, only to realize at the very end that it was just that a bunch of clips were linked together that I didn't even want linked together.

I did SO much shit to try and fix it. I uninstalled and reinstalled so many things.

Ugh.

Also, you know, musicals. Big on those.
stephank.bsky.social
Now that Stephen Sondheim is gone, I have no idea.

But tbh I like Tim Minchin's lyricism quite a bit.

But I clearly like when people stuff their lyrics with clever wordplay and whatnot.

I also need to know: I am fairly middle-of-the-road on Taylor Swift but someone I know called her the Greatest Living Lyricist. She is not.

Who is yours? Either the greatest or your favorite?
stephank.bsky.social
Yeah it feels like more complex enemies were necessary given Hornet's moveset.

Not sure so many needed to do quite as much damage as well, but at this point I've mostly adjusted to it.

So far in Silksong I definitely wish there were more Wishes to do. I feel like there's a lot more that can be done with them.

So far where I'm at in Act 2 it feels a bit underutilized.

Hey y'all! Here's part 1/2 of some boards I did for @jellybox.bsky.social for the remix of Everything is Fine, by @qbombband.bsky.social, remix by @livingtombstone.bsky.social! These boards were kept SUPER loose and served more as a general guideline for each of the animators.
