“what a ridiculous game to care about, to watch, to enjoy” good. blog.
That game stands out in my memory because the Phillies got wrecked by the Brewers. But-but!!-they got destroyed so badly that people left early and Rob Thompson put WESTON WILSON (outfielder) in to pitch, and he didn't give up a run! | cackled in the stands. What a ridiculous game to care about, to watch, to enjoy. Weston Wilson! It felt ludicrous to have that much fun at a game they lost.

Today my daughter's preschool is holding a farewell assembly for one of her classmates whose mother has no choice but to self deport. The school is hoping it will be joyful in tone, so we might make this less upsetting for this 3 year old.

There's just no words for the uselessness of this cruelty.

I’d like to amplify others’ pleas to *please* acknowledge and build upon the work of librarians and other organizers — @heykellyjensen.bsky.social, @tasslyn.bsky.social, @everylibrary.bsky.social, et al — who’ve been tracking *all of this* and developing expertise for YEARS.

You don't get to advocate for a thing and not notice the power-hoarding people who also like that thing. I struggle with people who do not seem to care who they are in coalition with or to at least think about what might happen if those people's vision happens instead of theirs.

about once a week, I hear a person in power explain, to those they have power over, that it is a “really hard time to be a leader.” Sure, of course it is. But it is a really hard time to be led! Terrible leaders currently control the things that most impact our lives!

just watched a dozen people ask microsoft copilot experts their most pressing questions and those questions were 90% “how do i turn it off?” and “when i turn it off, is it really off or is it spying on me?”

Credit where credit is due. The Democrats' message that the GOP shut down the government because they want to throw millions of people off healthcare has broken through. Two of my cousins who are NOT AT ALL tuned into national politics told me that this is why the government is shut down.

There's a social media trend of people attempting to run marathons with zero training and a take that really resonated with me is doing this means that you never really fail. I think the AI people have a similar mentality. They want to be able to say they have done a thing without doing it

there’s this weird idea a lot of people seem to have about how all of us writers and artists must secretly want to use AI and are merely resisting temptation for ethical reasons, and like, no, it’s not hard for me to resist drinking the bowl of Piss With Glass In It actually

My professional timeline right now is made up of four distinct silos wrt the principal global threat/challenge we face, in roughly this order:

1. AI

2. Russia

3. China

4. Climate

I'd reverse the order and eliminate the silos.

But most notably, Trump II has no plan for dealing with any of them.

I don't understand this but I assume (only an assumption!) I understand it as much as the SDSS dean understands SILS

SILS is one of the top library schools in the country. Not good.

Breaking: We’ve talked to multiple individuals who have confirmed that UNC-CH is merging SILS (library and information science) and SDSS (data science and society). Announcement will be tomorrow morning. Faculty were not consulted.

Was there a memo to all Atlantic tropical cyclones this year or something where they were all told to avoid the US
National Hurricane Center map of the Atlantic showing Tropical Storm Jerry to the east of the lesser Antilles with a projected path skirting the islands to the north before swinging further north and then east out to sea Map of the Atlantic showing all tropical cyclone paths for 2025, with most of them following the same general path where they appear scared to come anywhere near the US

My moment is

It's MacArthur day! It's MacArthur day!

I have a little ritual where, every announcement day, I watch the video, read the Fellows' bios, and ask myself how I'm being creative in my own work. Just a nice push to think outside the box.

Virginia State Senate Dems just brought down fire and fury regarding the “Compact,” notifying the President and Rector that UVA would lose ALL STATE APPROPRIATIONS if it signs and cedes the University to “federal political control.” Notably, their letter directly restates points made here by @siva.

The “compact” for higher ed is an unserious document written by unserious people from a position of spectacular ignorance. No one should take it seriously. Sadly, my bosses are taking it seriously.
