The first ALCS preview in the history of Lookout Landing, a site that's been around 20+ years.

The Mariners are going to play for the American League Championship.

The Blue Jays await an exhausted Seattle ballclub in what should be a very competitive ALCS. The series preview for @lookoutlanding.bsky.social:

This is part of why I like the regular season extra runner because .. in theory, extra inning games that go on very long sounds fun, but in practice, they all just start to look like *this.*

Tarik Skubal will have a fourth chance at finally beating the Mariners tonight. A look at how Seattle has approached him in the past and if there's a familiarity penalty for starters making multiple starts in a postseason series. My latest for @fangraphs.com: blogs.fangraphs.com/how-did-the-...
How Did the Mariners Beat Tarik Skubal Three Times — And Can They Do It Again?
Did the Mariners have a specific approach against Tarik Skubal that allowed them to beat him three times this season?

You've been listening to too much AJ Pierzynski.

Well not technically his best guys. I mean if you wanted to argue he should have gone with Muñoz in the 5th, I’d almost respect the boldness. But that’s not really the argument being made, which seems to be for a different middle innings option that doesn’t exist on the roster.

I think my hindsight manager moves look a lot like Wilson's

- Let Miller start the 5th and try to get 2 full TTO
- Break glass for Gabe Speier at first sign of trouble
- Go to Bazardo after the LHH

I don't... really see another set of options? Wilson went to his best guys in a timely manner.

We saw what they do well Tuesday: bludgeoning their opponent and outrunning their flaws. They did that enough this season to win the AL West, so it clearly works over time.

They didn't do that Wednesday, and they lost. It happens. That's the playoffs, in a nutshell.

I don't buy the handwringing about Wilson tonight. This game is pretty much how the Mariners lost all season: too-short SP outing and shallow bullpen exposed in the middle innings. It's just.... the roster.

It's a good roster! But it's a roster that won 90 games and not 100.

A very 2025 Mariners' pitching performance
swingsandtakes.com
It was a tricky season for the Mariners' pitching staff, with injuries and inconsistency derailing (perhaps) too-high expectations. They finished 18th in fWAR.

One stat best summarizes their season:
- 4.77 FIP in the 5th and 6th innings (27th in MLB)
- 3.68 FIP in all other innings (2nd in MLB)
A chart showing Mariners pitcher fWAR by month. They were great in July and September but much worse in June and August.
