Regarding #prairie and prairie #fire in Iowa from "Journalism of Northwest Iowa" by Charles Aldrich in Annals of Iowa (can't find pub year, but Aldrich died in 1908...certainly well beyond copyright). Don't deride "calendar prairies." Prairie was blossoms after blossoms through the growing season.

I'll quote from the text: Then what myriads of prairie flowers we had in those days! They becan to come in early spring and they kept coming all the season through until frosts of autumn destroyed that last and most beautiful of all, the aster, ad the golden rod. The prevailing colors were white, purple, and yellow, though some of the phloxes presented tints of red."

"One of the most interesting fetures of the old times in our county was the regularly recurring autumnal prairie fires. Not more than twenty-four hours after the first hard, killing frost, great masses of smoke would be seen rising in almost every direction...and so the grass burned off each season juast as it hwas in the ancient times of Indian occupation."
