Related note: I just found out one of them died back in April, and while Coast Guard history lost a scholar, it also lost a flaming asshole who used his scholarship to shitpost and issue divisive invectives on social media 30+ years after he retired.

It was so petty and stupid and the only reason I wore it. The COB would get all up with their "big emotions" and the CO or XO would have to break it to them that I qualified for it on two different cutters, one of which was the Eagle.

They used to get really upset with me when I'd wear my temporary one on deployments because I put it in the inactive slot and wasn't qualified on *their* cutter.

They went on Fred's Place (an internet forum for Coasties, back in the day) and complained about it, to which the aviation community started calling anyone who supported them getting permanent wings, "Former (or "Fantasy") Aviation Gunners."

So, this discourse has a long precedent.

The reason that every rating in the Coast Guard has qualification insignia now is largely due to the fact that aviation used to issue temporary aircrew "wings" to non-aviators and this pissed off two Rating Force Master Chiefs.

We've got a new manager working the graveyard shift, whom I blame for the lack for femboy/dickgirls at the cornerstore lately.

She'll interrupt her selling edibles to non-customers to turn away anyone she doesn't like if she can't scan their ID. Guess who she doesn't like?

They did this to the Coast Guard in 2019 and a bunch of Coasties jumped ship to Navy Fed. It'll be interesting see what happens on a much broader scale with DOD.

Yeah, we only have to look way, way, way back to *checks notes* 2019 when the Coast Guard didn't get paid for six weeks and Commanders had to sit everyone down and beg them to come back to work, because a whoollllllllle lot of dudes just dropped leave and found part time work.

By that time, I also had DRMO privileges at Coast Guard Island, so I could pick through the surplus before it went to auction.

I steered clear of that one because of the Confed and Gadsden flags. I mostly went to the one back in Modesto where I grew up. There was also a decent one in West Oakland, but they did police stuff too, so the surplus selection was smaller.
