The students have been incredible. Student journalism is LIT.

In the 90's, there was one random Anne Rice or Dean Koontz within 3 meters of you, no matter where you were. They were what you had nearby to read, so you read em.

Truly you cannot. And during applications last year the group chat was very lively with which universities sent in cops after their students vs which did almost literally anything else.

You know, I never thought of that! And now I wonder if they never did - or if they DID, and research showed people were more likely to remember if they’d been asked to figure it out for themselves. Because there has been A LOT of human factors research in aviation safety…

I’ve definitely been talking with parent friends about how, supporting our kids’ dreams notwithstanding, we might have to draw a line at Columbia

(Conveniently Mx18 was never interested in that one anyway)

I am now deeply disappointed that there will be no Saucy Week

Some of these GBBO baked goods are kinda blurred because I'm watching on iffy airplane wifi, and 100% it makes it look like the bakers are making carefully censored dirty pastry sculptures

This! Even if you can't or don't want to march, showing up is important. Come to the start of the march or hang out on the route to support those who are marching. Some locations may just be holding a rally of solidarity rather than a march. Your presence and voice are power.

I would like to reiterate that everyone - even those of us who don't usually protest - should go to a No Kings March on Saturday, October 18th. Find one near you at this link. You do not have to register to participate.

By contrast, JB Pritzker told me that people should flood the No Kings protests precisely in order to let the American people know that something is deeply amiss.

More Dems should be doing this, to send the message widely that we are in real trouble right now.

I was just thinking about that with the obit I posted yesterday, this 100-year-old activist who'd started out in 1930s labor movement stuff when she must've been a teenager. But OF COURSE, a teen girl being passionate about social justice is like....the most believable thing ever.

Feels like days until Philly is subject to the same fate as Chicago/Portland, and my students are diving headlong into big questions with enthusiasm and curiosity and compassion. I have never had a more engaged group.

week 7, in a city under siege for 32 days and counting, and the students who are able to come to class despite the blitz are showing up like their lives depend on those 50 minutes of togetherness, poetry, and big questions
miriamposner.com
IDK, man. School started 2 weeks ago for us, and once again students remind me that they’re so curious and interested in the world and anxious to ask big questions. We hear that these questions are no longer useful or relevant, but wherever that’s coming from, it’s not what students believe.

If you can show up on October 18, you should. The country is shifting. The battleship is turning. And while, yes, usually mass street protests don't do much, there are exceptions.

And sometimes those exceptions go down in history.

So this IL Hospital Association memo describes an incident where ICE detained a US citizen, gave them HEART PROBLEMS, took them to a hospital where the fought with medical personnel, then left when they realized they detained a CITIZEN.

MIT rejects "compact" proposed by the Trump administration.
MIT prez wrote: it "would restrict freedom of expression and our independence as an institution" and "is inconsistent with our core belief that scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone."

I think there’s also a super problematic thing about how a lot of the research is by neurotypicals & interventions focus on performing NT well, which has nothing to do with how autistics experience autism & what supports they would find helpful, but hugely impacts how NTs frame their understanding
thatandromeda.bsky.social
I think neurodivergence that specifically affects social skills makes people read to neurotypicals as part of the out group, & people get weird and paranoid about out group members, & don’t know how to deal with having them in the ultimate in group, the family

(I don’t have much patience for this)

ME: Now Mom, just remember, there's a lot of disinformation and AI in your social feed and your friends' Facebook.
MOM: I know! My friend sent me this crazy post where someone used AI to make an image of a giant frog fighting Army troops!
ME: ... okay, no, that one's ... goddamit, Portland.
