First impressions of BlueSky so far: it's looking to be the people's platform.

The bigger influencer/celebrity accounts from Twitter probably won't be here much, but it's a haven for independent artists to thrive in, and for you to just hang out with your mutuals again.

Notably: every single rally (including in the small towns) was bigger than the surrounding police force available. That kind of image event is VERY IMPORTANT if you're, I dunno, demonstrating social coherence AGAINST a fascist government and it's makeshift gestapo.

When the conflict expands in scale & scope, the good feelings help propel people to do hard things. Shitting on the public rallies is fucking dumb. It's also ahistorical and lacks any serious engagement with the history of social movement successes in the US. It's just trashy demobilization.

Fun and play are often a part of social movements as the people trust the larger group to hold their values as the conflict with the state expands. The anti-WTO protests in Seattle in 1999 were full of folks dressed like loggerhead turtles and dolphins and stuff dancing to RATM. Very fun + serious.

These are opportunities for people to find solidarity and introduce them to direct action & community organizing. It lets people know that they aren't alone, and if they put their minds to something, they can defeat these fascist idiots.

Treat it as a Day Zero event for the long haul.

and I think a crucial lesson of the Trump era is that there is great value in people not expressing these things openly! that's a big and decisive change!

For those tempted to say Young Republicans have always been this way, they really have not. When I worked on campus and did bipartisan college events after, they were very much not like this.

That’s why groups like YCT and eventually TPUSA formed — because Young Republicans weren’t radical enough.
