I totally understand enjoying them as a Nice Thing to own and I myself have bought editions of books specifically because they have a great design and look really good on a shelf. But if you've bought the thing to read it then yeah, exactly.

He scorned such fumble-fingered amateurs. Everything he built worked. It just didn’t do what it said on the box. Although it's quite specifically focused on army and warfare I'm not sure this aspect of his writing/character is articulated as well or as key to the whole story as in Monsterous Regiment. There's loads of great subtexty things in that story, even moreso than usual for Terry.

By my understanding there never could be a "cure" for those of us who already exist anyway. It's not a disease. So what they actually mean is a way to stop anymore autistic people being born. So they absolutely think we shouldn't exist and what they want is undeniably eugenics. Dickheads.

These very true words from Steve Hely have given me tremendous comfort over the years.

Writing a novel— actually picking the words and filling in paragraphs— is a tremendous pain in the ass. Now that TV’s so good and the Internet is an endless forest of distraction, it’s damn near impossible. That should be taken into account when ranking the all-time greats. Somebody like Charles Dickens, for example, who had nothing better to do except eat mutton and attend public hangings, should get very little credit.
