Happy #PortfolioDay!
I'm a palaeontology student and mostly draw various unusual animals (both extinct and extant), and like doing interesting vegetation and backgrounds! I also do some more technical scientific illustration.

(1 of 2) illustrated plate of smoky quartz specimens from Idaho in my collection. I dug a couple of these myself and the rest were bought from independent rockhounds. These are all from the Sawtooth Batholith and dug mostly in the Trinities.

For friendsofabracadaver on tumblr, a Least Bittern! Big thanks once again for the #Waymakers donation. The challenge is over for this year but I'll be wrapping up bird art for donors over the next couple weeks. Much appreciation to all of you who joined in!

🎨🪶 #BirdArt #SciArt
Digital painting of a Least Bittern clinging to green reeds as it aims downward, watching the water carefully for movement. It has yellow eyes, a very sharp pointy beak, and a mottled gray-yellow-reddish back. The water surface is murky and covered in little green duckweed leaves.

I haven’t really been completely satisfied with some of my art for #invertober2025 (mainly because I don’t have time to put more effort into each one), so I’m switching to a different style for the rest of the animals.

2 days since I finished the ~6 months of graphite drawings of rock formations & series of bones. kind of feeling the desire to draw perhaps a graphite drawing of an interestingly shaped crystal...

overall grey colour is definitely an intentional atmospheric effect and not just having kind of messed up the tone. aaaaaaaargh...

Miturgidae spiders are so cute!! They've got most of my favourite desert species probably as well.

Up close with a lovely female Prowling Spider (I think Syspira sp.) from the Mojave Desert last weekend. These spiders look a bit like wolf spiders, and likewise are pursuit/ambush hunters. One difference is eye pattern - wolf spiders have one pair of eyes much larger than the rest. #arachnids 🐙🌿
A macro photo looking into the face of a spider sitting on desert sand. The spider is overall sand-colored, with dark banding on the legs and dark blotches on the cephalothorax, making it well-camouflaged. It has a few long, perpendicular black bristles on the legs, and shorter hairs covering the body, legs, and head. The chelicerae (mouthparts that end in the fangs) are orange, as is a portion of the face just below the eight black eyes. The eyes are all roughly the same size.

Prowling spider, Syspira sp., one of my favorite desert species. This one was barely 1/2 inch including leg span. Shot at 4.5X & a slight crop; nine shots stacked together to get the whole face in focus. I love how well camouflaged it is on the pale sand, like a little spider ghost. #Arachtober 🌿🐙👻🕷️
An extreme closeup photo, at ground level, looking into the face of a cream-colored spider on similarly-colored sand. The spider has sparse dark hairs and several longer spiny hairs, and dark eyes. All eight eyes are visible. Most of the legs are out of frame. There's a bit of crinkly silk in the lower left.
