Turned out there were taxes under communism, something I didn’t realise.

Not inheritance taxes, admittedly. And definitely not Ukrainian farmer inheritance taxes. For obvious reasons.

(Actually, I’d probably go further and say it’s arguable Mamdani is a generational talent and the Democrats must be cursing the fact he was born abroad - something Zack really isn’t, no offence again meant to him - but it’s still NYC and NYC is Sui generis)

New York has had 3 Republican mayors since 1945, and one of them was a billionaire who literally owned his own news network. Whilst Mamdani seems to be a solid politician and I wish him well, I honestly don’t think we can read across from NYC.

Yeah I think fair enough argument “he’s the right leader to rally the greens by peeling off left voters” (I don’t actually think that’s true, they got their highest ever seats last election from strategic ambiguity and he’s going to put off a certain segment with his leftism). But unsure that

Think I diverge from you quite significantly on the principle of this one (I don’t care for either politician specifically) in as much as it feels like saying you’re going to combat bigotry by making sure no gay, Jewish, woman, etc. representatives are fielded.

Feels a little like it’s “I want to hear someone articulate the things I believe back at me” and whilst I absolutely get that (there’s many a time I’ve wished that, including uh currently), in the political moment we are in, choosing that kind of leader maybe does smack a tiny bit of narcissism.

Sure (I think his stuff is hugely overrated tbh), but that doesn’t get around the “his personal identity” thing which I would *assume* that the racists and bigots the poster thinks are out there would be more influenced by than his ability to TikTok

Honestly - and not one iota of this is said with a particular animus towards Polanski - fascinated by the mindset which says “the country is getting more bigoted, don’t pick the posh old white guy, pick the gay Jewish atheist vegan with a lisp”. Can we not see the disconnect here?

I don’t think he was as knee deep as Butler, to quibble your quibble. Home was Chamberlain’s parliamentary aide, Butler was an FO minister who backed appeasement to the hilt and literally gave the winding up speech for the government on the Munich debate. Feel that’s more substantial?
