I am actually speechless at the power of this imagery and the effect it will have on anyone who has ever taken their Catholicism remotely seriously.

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”

In the dark dystopian future of my YA novel, people with larger than average heads, "megacephs", are a feared and oppressed class. It is not so different from reality...

I’m just saying, fellow locals, we have an unprecedented opportunity to win hearts, minds, and genitals during fleet week this year. someone sound the alarm in the Castro

Isaac and I were trying to game out what SF’s it factor is — the equivalent of Portland’s theatre-kid whimsy — so we can use it tactically when they try deploying troops here. our conclusion was that it’s gay fucking, and so we need to really roll out the red carpet during fleet week

the gentle strains of the sax riff from Careless Whisper drifting in through the apartment window on a soft evening breeze. i love you San Francisco

Baja is going to get me through at least October I think

if you’re in the Bay Area you can go meet her at Muttville in SF — she’s not on their website yet as she’s a very new arrival but she will be adoptable! she’s seven years old, reserved but very happy to hang out. she waggled her paws admonishingly at me every time I stopped petting her

need you all to know about Baja
a tiny, tiny pomeranian looking dog lies on her back, swaddled in a baby blue fleece blanket

all this to say that if you've been wondering how i'm getting through it? the answer is one part "already abased myself before multiple immigration systems, my grim resolve in the face of adversity is honestly a bit monstrous" and one part hard liquor

last night we had dinner at our friends' place and I drank Disco Lemonade (a 14% vodka/huckleberry/lemonade melange that promised "bomb diggity good vibes"), became very joyful and briefly forgot about the world caving in. is my skull paying the price of freedom today? you know it. worth it though

they didn't want a country full of Margery Kempes, basically. this is all very hastily summarised and probably not remembered as well as it could be, but! you get the idea I hope

so authors like Mirk (of "Festial" fame) would explicitly construct the saints' lives as allegorical lessons, encouraging laypeople to accept suffering gracefully as God's will (and thereby not stick their heads above the parapet, theologically speaking)
waverlysm.bsky.social
the average layperson in the 1100s was not supposed to anticipate or want being singled out as exceptional by god, they were supposed to do as they were told by the clergy (as god's mouthpiece). saints got unfiltered access to god, basically. the clergy had an interest in reframing that, and did.

the gist is that the saints' lives were not written to be read in book format, but to be read/preached to the laity by clergy. that's a very clearly instructional/educational context! but a complicating factor: saints themselves would not have been considered aspirational. they were too active.

now that's what i call the gender spectrum

sadly it’s more in the vein of contextless clips of beautiful China, which I’m not sure is helpful in this case
