Most of this laundry list of "overwhelming evidence" is tendentious. Let's go through them.
1) A big driver of high costs at public universities has been a decrease in state appropriations. Many public schools have been forced to act on a public/private model as a result..../1
The evidence is overwhelming: outrageous costs and prolonged indebtedness for students; poor outcomes, with too many students left unable to find meaningful work after graduating; some talented domestic students and scholars have been crowded out of enrollment and employment opportunities by international students; and a high degree of uniformity of thought among faculty members and administrators, which can result in a hostile environment for students with different ideas.

ok so I added several more fairly prominent opportunities / links to them and - crucially imo - the deadlines for those applications

what else would make this webpage more useful?

input requested from #polisky: I did a mini-revamp of APSA's grants and fellowships webpage in the spring, but I wanted to do a more substantive overhaul this fall given *gestures broadly*

What is missing? What presentation of these opportunities would be most useful?

Apart from the massive invasion of academic freedom that this compact demands, MIT simply does not want a special leg up—it wants "open competition for excellence."

"In that free marketplace of ideas, the people of MIT gladly compete with the very best, without preferences."

A stunning rebuke.

@aacu.org has stepped up & called the Trump "compact" for higher ed what it is: "The compact is, in effect, an ultimatum...This is not constructive engagement." Big question is where is @aau.edu? If your university is part of AAU, write to your president & trustees now.

I missed this earlier this week, but the Directors of NIAID, NICHD, NIMHD, & NINR were all fired. The NIAID Director, Mazzaro, was likely fired in retaliation for speaking out against the anti-vaccine moves made by the administration.

Friends @emanabdelhadi.bsky.social is doing well— she’s at home, released last night. I’ll let her speak on the ordeal when she’s ready but for now wanted to share this update.

Please call Cook County DA and ask them to drop charges against the group of protesters arrested in Chicago yesterday: (312) 603-1880

This is particularly for Illinois residents, but national calls couldn’t hurt.

Here is my best understanding of the timeline:
*A MAGA student recorded professor, objected to gender content
*Had one or more meetings with A&M President, which she also records
*He first tells her no-one is getting fired
*Recording released, political pressure, he fires professor, later resigns
Welsh’s action marks a sharp turn from his comments captured in one of the clips circulated Monday, in which he told a student upset about the content that “firing” the professor was “not happening.” The shift follows mounting political pressure from Republican lawmakers, including Texas Rep. Brian Harrison, R-Midlothian, who posted the clips online and called on state and federal officials to investigate.

The video, which does not show anyone’s face, captures audio of a student objecting to a professor teaching that there are more than two genders. The student says this conflicts with President Donald J. Trump’s executive order and her religious beliefs, and the professor responds she has a right to teach the lesson and the student has a right to leave. It is unclear when the video was shot, and Texas A&M officials have not identified the student or the professor involved.

So if you remember that frustrating article a couple of weeks ago at the Dispatch suggesting that we ought to save the sciences by shoving the humanities overboard, I wrote a response to the financial illiteracy and moral cowardice of that position: thedispatch.com/article/univ...
