Firefox has been my go-to browser for nearly 2 decades but not much longer. The enshittification is real and I'm sick of it.

Fix to turn off "AI" defaults in this thread. Thank you, @maocat.bsky.social

I just checked mine again and it had it re-enabled as well. There’s only one related option in my config that remained unchanged, but there’s also plenty more now that have been enabled without asking.
Mozilla is rapidly enshittifying their most important application.

Firefox hit me today with the fucking AI bot popups

discovered some of the browser .ml .* shit i'd disabled in about:config had *switched back on*

someone at @mozilla.org is playing fuck fuck games with users' preferences.

hey @mozilla.org who is responsible for this?

I guess I’ve been very fortunate. Both my rescue pups (a lab mix and an Anatolian Shepherd mix) that both came from really awful situations are excellent judges of character

Andrea Reyes Elizondo @altibel.bsky.social and I have responded to a blog, recently published on @leidenmadtrics.bsky.social, which argued that using AI responsibly in research means being transparent about it. We object that supposed transparency obscures more fundamental ethical questions.
Why AI transparency is not enough
Recently, a taxonomy to disclose the use of generative AI (genAI) in research outputs was presented as an approach that creates transparency and thereby supports responsible genAI use. In this post we...

“Inscrutable dog reasons” 😂

The true test is whether the animal likes the person.

When my daughter was a teenager, her date had to meet our dog. Her curfew depended on Loki’s reaction: later if dog-approved, earlier if not.

Black lab had a 1.000 batting average. Early curfew was never wrong, per my kid.

This is why the AFT partnership with OpenAI, etc., is so &^$%# dangerous.

Survey finds higher use of Gen AI in schools correlates with:

data breaches
deepfakes used to bully and sexually harass
inappropriate relationships
less social connection
student surveillance

1 in 5 high schoolers has had a romantic AI relationship, or knows someone who has
A national survey of students, teachers and parents shines a light on how the AI revolution is playing out in schools – including when it comes to bullying and a community's trust in schools.

Grandmaster Flash has been adopted!

His new family named him "Stilgar" because he has strong Javier Bardem energy*

*please accept this brief moment of silliness to help modulate the authoritarianism in plain sight. We need you in the fight. Find joy wherever you can to keep your spirits up

1/10 There are very abstract concepts that must be taken as truth in order to subjugate humans to technology and its owners. One of the most powerful is the idea that computation is consciousness and life is information, the core belief behind what philosophers call computational functionalism.

One curious thing on this site about speaking out against the encroachment of LLMs is that inevitably you get accused of being anti-tech. I don’t hate technology. I’ve used machine learning in my own code before. But I also recognize that oligarchs are so hellbent on pushing this tech for a reason.

Recently gave a colleague feedback on a paper that was partly written with ChatGPT. What did I learn from this and how should we deal with cases like this? Here are some thoughts 🧵(1/x)

I’m unbothered by those who have no moral core. History and the law will respond to their dead souls in due time. My aim is to engage the still uninformed and encourage them to act, vote, and resist in any way they can.

It’s well past time to organize white Boomers and Gen X to show up at the front of the protests. Video of ICE beating/gassing elderly and middle age people wearing suits and scrubs and other workwear will create iconic images that are hard to ignore and harder to justify.

Reminder that @theguardian.com has a partnership with OpenAI, and has of late published a spate of asinine articles that are uncritical in framing, and just read as press releases for the company and for "AI" in general.
The headline/implicit framing of this article seems consistent with its biases.

Oh, man. After reading the article, what it actually says is that an historian did a lot of archival work and spatial research to determine the site of a killing and then the family of the likely perpetrator stepped forward with photographs to confirm identity.

In our book Real Intelligence, we talk about the need to rethink grading and assignments in the era of generative AI. Here's another resource for exploring alternative approaches to grading.

I shared this tidbit with my data science students yesterday. The look of shock on their faces was priceless.

We had an incredible conversation about how long one would expect to remain employed if they had a 43% error rate in their work.

A missing element of the discussion is how far right commentary is very purposefully and expertly subdivided, then repackaged to target specific conservative audiences. The entire propaganda enterprise cuts across multiple channels to claim plausible deniability about the whole authoritarian aim.
