If AI coding is so good, where are the performance numbers?

Claude bros know how to measure performance. They just don't.

I'm really excited that this thing from Ive could be a reality because it's a perfect package to confirm so much of my theory around what makes a bad [tech] product

Real problem? The product exists because it's possible. Not because it is the result of a deliberative design process to find the best way to satisfy a concrete purpose.

Every AI wearable has the same challenge - make a hardware container for chatGPT that can't be replaced by a smartphone app.

The most obvious way to do that? Fashion.

The problem? Fashion works by being visible.

From portable tech that you didn't want to hide because there was no question about its purpose.

The blurrier the purpose gets the more the products need to be hidden.

A few months ago, ICE hired me

I didn't sign and submit any paperwork. I almost certainly failed the drug test. I'm real outspoken about my opposition to the Trump administration, and I am extremely googlable

And yet, there it was, in plain English. "Welcome to ICE!"

My latest for Slate
You’ve Heard About Who ICE Is Recruiting. The Truth Is Far Worse. I’m the Proof.
What happens when you do minimal screening before hiring agents, arming them, and sending them into the streets? We're all finding out.

We don’t dance on the grave of NFTs enough. I had a year where I was repeatedly told by bozos I was going to be irrelevant and extinct for not embracing them, I should be allowed a victory lap.

One thing we might get out of all this is being more demanding of new coding paradigms having some data to back them up. As programmers, we've accepted "trust me, it's better, bro" far too often for decades.

AI sure is a lot of 'feelings' from the same people who brought us 'facts don't matter to your feelings'
January 13, 2026 at 2:17 AM
what are the *best* studies of AI coding that *measure* it, not just ask the devs how they *feel* about it?

not if the dev thinks they're faster. but if they *measure* faster by some reasonable methodology.

best study i know of is the METR study. that's limited (and lists its caveats). >>
