I agree with this myself, I just think the author goes about it in a rather stupid way. Hades 2 wants to be more serious but also do its Bits and it *can* do both of them decently but it feels like it never stops wanting to do Bits so the serious stuff is drowned out a lot. Unfortunate.

It is this part that I kinda take offense to.

I’m not Greek, but from my own experience of growing up in a place tied to Norse mythology, this sort of reverence is antithetical to folklore and myth.

That shit is whimsical and weird and saying you can’t depict it as such feels distinctly Christian.

This type of criticism reminds me of when people would complain about the mythological depictions in games like Odin Sphere or Valkyrie Profile.

Hades does not purport to be an accurate retelling or representation of myth, attempting to be so would probably run counter to what its writers want to do, it's kind of eye rolling to pretend it's anything else. The Gods are played up because they're powerups first and foremost lol.

The issue with this sort of hand-wringing post about the accuracy or seriousness of using mythos as set dressing is that people have been doing this with Greek myth since before it even stopped being worshipped. Greek myth is folklore at best and it's always been malleable.

Oh fair, it's not a conceit everyone can make, it's not one everyone *can* make (what counts as "pandering" is pretty subjective... I find a lot of things "pandering" so I've learned to tune it out...), but I just enjoy playing the game tons so I deal. Make the same conceit with a lot of games.

Hades 1 can afford these to some people (but I still dislike Hades as an actual person and the game never really improves him) because it's basically just a family dispute... not so much here. It is what it is.

In every other respect, I still find H2 much more fun to play than H1, so it's w/e ig.

Hades 1 is a game about repairing relationships but we still barely see any of this happen in the story. Hades himself is extremely abusive and even post-credits (and post-feast) not much actually changes... Hades 2 is kind of much the same. But it rings much more hollow because the stakes are high.

I've played 100 hours of Early Access and a good few hours now that the game is proper out and I've succeeded by mostly ignoring the narrative!

On a serious note, I think SGG bit off more than they could chew while still abiding by their themes established in the first game.

So the easy answer is 'no', especially if you're trying to build literacy toward newer titles. Even for more niche genre like shmups, they've useful and part of the learning process.

That said, they can still be huge trap and savestating through a game is like watching a movie in the background
