This is not really about Hamas violating the terms of the ceasefire. This is just collective punishment of the people of Gaza. And the fact that Israel is still doing this is a big part of why people are not celebrating the ceasefire just yet.

In my experience the turning point for a critical mass of liberal activists and apparatchiki was the Sheikh Jarrah protests and the Unity Intifada of 2021. In the eventually made periodizations of this era, I think we will recognize the starting point to have been around then, and not Sept-Oct 2023.

People who criticize LLM companies for not adhering to copyrights are completely correct about the hypocrisy and inconsistent application of the law. But they tend to get the correct resolution backward, imo. The answer is to make information free for everyone, not to make LLMs respect the gates.

What makes LLMs work as a business is precisely that all this text is decommodified, free. As they themselves say, they'd have to shut down if they had to pay for their trainging data. Yet all that data is the product of human labor. This cutting edge of capitalism rests on a substrate of communism.

In all the endless discussions of LLMs, there’s a point that is, on one level, obvious, but that I feel does not get sufficiently foregrounded: LLMs are transforming material that people have put up on the internet.
