The settler visions developed in this "Brazilian laboratory" would go on to fuel the settler colonial projects enacted by both Japan and Germany during WWII. Those projects were part of broader efforts to establish an alternative economic order to the emerging US-led one.
An interesting historical theme is how both Japan and Germany saw Brazil as a "settler colonial laboratory." Japanese settlers in Brazil acted as part of the broader imperial project and promoted settler colonial visions in Southeast Asia in the 1930s and 1940s.

Timothy Mellon, a descendant of Gilded Age dynastic capitalism, being a key Trump backer is very interesting. Gels well with Cooper's arg that Trumpism is backed by factions of capital that use family incorporation & the rhetoric of "family values" to shield themselves from regulation and taxation.

Talking to @keanuheydari.bsky.social is crazy because he'll be like "I have a hypothesis" and then the next sentence is "I do think the world did end in 2012"

Tipu was historically progressive. Eviscerated petty rentiers of South India in his conquests & laid the groundwork for the ryotwari system, which allowed for private ownership of land w/o rents due to any middlemen unlike the zamindari system which predominated in rest of India.

A tradition of mobilizing in response to rumors of liberation by external forces allowed enslaved people to rush en masse to union lines during the Civil War. This act, what DuBois called a general strike, was decisive in convincing Lincoln to pass the Emancipation Proclamation

Great analysis by Steven Hahn of the role of rumor as a form of political struggle among slave populations in the rural South. Rumors not only imparted information but mobilized recipients while being anonymous and untraceable. . .

The decline of demographic and economic power experienced by Ottoman Christians as Muslim refugees from other parts of the empire arrived and benefited from favorable policies caused them to increasingly support anti-Ottoman Arab nationalism.

The demographic revolution of the Late Ottoman Levant. Muslim refugees arriving from Crimea & Balkans were able to obtain private land titles, grow cash crops, and prosper. Christians struggled with feudal system + decline of old crafts & trade routes, causing many to emigrate.
