I live in a walkable neighbourhood, close to mass transit, in the third largest metro in the country. And my backyard is a country bear jamboree.

Canada is just not beating the stereotypes.

Fall yard cleanup is always bittersweet. With young kids and summer travel, we did less with thr garden than usual.

But now we can close that chapter and start putting in bulbs for spring. Tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, maybe get some crocuses.

There was a fork in the road right after the election.

I suspect there was serious evaluation of what we'd need militarily to break with the US, and we chose to bury our heads in the sand and pretend.

Fundamentally, that's just what Canadians do with hard problems.

My naive wish is that even one Canadian journalist, one politician, one security analyst, would address the implications of Canada choosing military integration with an authoritarian power that no longer respects the rule of law or international law.
Looks like that’s not going to happen today.

If 68% of the sample can't provide satisfactory evidence of a JV with an Indigenous-controlled company, it looks less like an affirmative action program and more like a slush fund.

The review of the Procurement Strategy for Indigenous Business specifically found weaknesses related to a provision that allows non-Indigenous companies to win federal contracts under the program, provided that they partner in a joint venture with an Indigenous company.

Auditors examined the program in part by looking at 50 random companies registered to participate, in order to confirm that proper verification procedures were followed.

They found that 68 per cent of cases had missing or incomplete verification documents.

I'm waiting to see what SCC says, but two aspects of Cowichan to keep an eye on:

1. Title = exclusive right to possession, it absolutely trumps private ownership (political Q whether nation wants to force this);

2. More title is claimed than land in BC -- nation on nation conflict inevitable

Came up recently in MB, where Bloodvein First Nation won recognition of interests in land which, though part of the FN's traditional territory, was ceded in an adhession to Treaty 5.

I'm not sure Premier Kinew's government appreciated the precedent that sets, but it bodes ill!

Do you bleed the ones you're keeping? I don't know if it actually makes much difference, but I was taught to cut the gills out both to speed death and bleed them out.

Might just be one of those traditions that persists without justification.

3% of the population of NYC in 1870 was made of of homeless orphaned or abandoned children. We just don't have a mental model for what pre-1900 destitution looked like because it's too horrific for us to consider.

In the 1870s, there were 20,000-30,000 homeless, orphaned, and abandoned children in New York City each year. The population of New York in 1870 was 940k. 3% of the cities population were abandoned, homeless children. They didn't all make it.
