Retired engineers, for *generations* have been a fertile ground for crackpot theories in everything.

Doug Wilson co-authored a (plagiarized) book that defended the institution of slavery *as it was practiced in the antebellum South*. This is how Douthat introduced the subject while providing him with the NYT's platform:

Depending where you are, there are some conflating factors too, though. Small communities tend to skew Republican in their wealthy members and a lot of donations going to things that are local into some degree come back around or at least are very visible. -
