Most engineering can be done by relatively normal people, but they don't do it because it requires interacting with the people who are currently engineers
annenotation.bsky.social
This isn't remotely weird if you know
engineers

Think about how for decades, one of the ingredients of a crackpot was: retired engineer.

Retired engineers, for *generations* have been a fertile ground for crackpot theories in everything.

They get that golden watch and bam, incoherent manifesto about quantum archeology inbound.

Hello, for all that I complain about shit, I'm an effective Democrat for one reason: I want the fucking Democrats to win and I think the other side sucks garbage out of the stinky old bin's fucking ass

My parents knew that I read Ozzie and Millie when I was really young and it was completely age-appropriate so how long ago do they think you sold out??

I spent way too long having to put up with a joy-draining force in my life who told me "I bet there are homeless people drowning at the river bottom" whenever I acted happy that it rained, I'm officially inoculated against having to put up with this shit on social media of all places.
politiburb.bsky.social
I feel like there's just a segment of the population, trans or cis or otherwise, who will always insist that being happy is fundamentally a character flaw that implies you are insufficiently aware of/don't care enough about the world's problems

Following MTG's lengthy CNN sitdown interview, Wolf Blitzer tells her:

"You‘re a courageous politician, but more important, a loving mother. Thanks very much for coming in. We hope you‘ll come back here in the Situation Room."

this sucks shit. in medieval times they'd be pillaging farms and they can't even do that

If this was happening in any other country you'd have journalists and analysts discussing risks of state failure

Doug Wilson co-authored a (plagiarized) book that defended the institution of slavery *as it was practiced in the antebellum South*. This is how Douthat introduced the subject while providing him with the NYT's platform:
Douthat: So, just to take a related example, one of the controversies of many that you’ve been mixed up in has to do with slavery, and whether slavery is absolutely forbidden by the Bible, absolutely forbidden to Christians, or whether it is critiqued, but allowed for.

Wilson: Right.

Douthat: And you think it is critiqued, but allowed for.

Wilson: Right.

Douthat: On this, on a straightforward reading of the New Testament, I would agree with you. I would say, pretty clearly, there is a pretty clear path from the message of the Bible to the abolition of slavery. But there is no moment in the New Testament when Jesus insists on the manumission of slaves.

Wilson: Right.

It's always always always always a mistake to bring in the libertarians because among other things there's no actual thing as a real libertarian

The bigger issue is everybody else stumbles worse. It's not that the USA can't hobble itself it's that at the end of the day you'll have a hard time shanking Curly if you're Moe

The US economy has more forward inertia than virtually any in history, but the prevailing wisdom is that said inertia is literally infinite
unavaleable.bsky.social
a thing that i think i am coming to terms with as a polisci guy is the US economy is so vast that it can actually tank an incredibly amount of disaster before it rattles apart, but we could uh still get there

Part of the reason the right aggressively demonizes George Soros is to dissuade any other left-of-center wealthy guys from doing actual politics the way every right wing billionaire happily does.

rightist plutocrats are doing politics. liberal plutocrats are doing charity. it’s an entirely different mindset.

- whereas if you say, give $10 million in the city of Seattle, you probably won't see anything happen and it won't invigorate your local community in a way that is likely to benefit you remotely commensurately.
annenotation.bsky.social
Depending where you are, there are some conflating factors too, though. Small communities tend to skew Republican in their wealthy members and a lot of donations going to things that are local into some degree come back around or at least are very visible. -
