If Democrats win a trifecta in Arizona next year (which is entirely possible), they might as well add two more seats to the AZ Supreme Court, for a total of nine. They can then restore a liberal majority (after replacing one Republican justice who must retire in 2027 anyway due to age limits).

The subject was revisited by Norman Rockwell in 1954, with a starker contrast between the generations, fewer heartstrings, and much more optimism.

Rockwell's painting was also hugely popular. Like Hovenden's take, it was widely reproduced, and got the movie treatment too.

Probably some kind of joke you could make about how even manufacturing consent has been moved overseas

breaking news from Passan: The New York Mets and Texas Rangers are finalizing a trade that would send second baseman Marcus Semien to the Mets and outfielder Brandon Nimmo to the Rangers

I think this is mostly San Francisco finally shrugging off the pandemic, but it is *really* funny that rent prices in San Francisco shot up *immediately* after the city banned RealPage and other algorithmic price setting software.

My pre trends are incredible!

I suspect this is true - the humanities will go back to being a status marker. Rich kids and the elect get to study Homer, but the middle class must settle for adjunct-taught mega-lectures before STEM classes.

A grim destination, but right now that is the road the voters keep choosing.
My hot take is that over the next 10 years, we're going to see more emphasis on and investment in the humanities at Ivy League and other fancy schools just as state schools and small privates continue to decimate and even eliminate the humanities.
"While other universities report that the humanities are shrinking, at Berkeley, the opposite is true. The music major is the fastest-growing major on campus. We are finding bigger classrooms because film is exploding. English is back to the numbers we saw 15 years ago. We are hiring" bit.ly/4ohKuOe

DOGE was a failure according to its stated mission on paper—yes. But we don’t have insight into how much data and security was compromised, and you can’t really trust any element of the govt right now to conduct an audit. And Elon and his teens (illegally) killing USAID was a crime against humanity!

american oligarchs uniformly abandoned a lifetime of democratic support because it was easier for them to believe that “based meme” accounts run by czechoslovakian teens were proof of a mass populist movement in service to elon musk than face the hard truth that most people hate their fucking guts

The myopia of the press really shines through in this story and the people trying to defend them. There are actual victims to this story and it’s not any of the three trashy stars of it. It’s all of the kids who will die of measles
Olivia Nuzzi could have easily sinked RFK Jr. and she didn’t. She knew what he was capable of doing at HHS and she chose not to destroy him.
Lizza is an unreliable narrator and a creep but she was deeply compromised (and still is) when she was covering the 2024 election. I think Lizza’s revenge has probably killed any chance of us knowing the extent to which she helped RFK Jr’s campaign and to the extent the Trump Campaign.

It is important for you to realize that you have probably never once in your life sent a private email. That’s just not how email works. Sure, turn off whatever Gmail features you want, but you’re just playing whack-a-mole with the technical realities of email as a concept.

something i'll note is that if nuzzi ran catch-and-kill ops for rfk jr and lizza knew this prior to him being appointed as HHS, and instead of telling anyone, he decided to save it for his substack long after rfk jr had made communicable disease into federal policy, that's completely fucked

Yeah! We get the high value add design jobs, Vietnam gets the 7% profit margin manufacturing jobs. Seems like a great deal!

Almost every country in the world would be considered in violation of human rights by this standard
"Countries with state subsidies for abortion, transgender-friendly policies for children, hate speech laws and affirmative action policies will now be considered to be violating human rights under rules imposed at the [US] State Department..."
