"The current dogma is that vertebrates develop cone-dominated retinas first, adding rods later. Here we show that larval deep-sea fishes have “hybrid” photoreceptors, expressing cone-specific genes in rod-like cells."

We lost another shrimp today. And most likely it was our favorite one we called grandma. They keep dying behind the sponge filter

wikipedia turns 25 today! the last unenshittified major website! backbone of online info! triumph of humanity! powered by urge of unpaid randos to correct each other! somehow mostly reliable! "good thing wikipedia works in practice, because it sure doesn't work in theory" - old wiki adage

Very rough pencil sketches of extant & extinct (Cenozoic) herrings 🐟

The curvy ones are based on photos of fossils, hence the ambiguous fin shapes

Why do women leave vertebrate palaeontology?

A review of vertebrate palaeontologists from 2018 found out, that the retention of men in the field, is almost at 100%, while for women, who already were under-represented, mere 30% stay in the field. It's not leaky pipeline, it's a running tap.

Wrasses and parrotfish (family Labridae) are among the most diverse lineages of reef fishes on earth. A new study sheds light on Labridae diversification during the Miocene.

Painting reef fish is so rewarding because I get to use some vibrant colors. Hello, turquoise and magenta!
