Blown away by this review of "Flowers from the Black Sea" that appeared on Amazon yesterday:
"A joy to devour. A great read. The author is as significant as Eric Ambler, Ian Fleming and Graham Greene in bringing the vivid, often brutal, setting of Turkey alive almost as an additional character...."

It’s a glorious time of the year, isn’t it? I posted a similar pic yesterday, which shows top left the edge of the balcony off my office. Every morning the top of the maple tree greets me like sunshine when I walk to my desk.

Such a gorgeous display of colour this afternoon. I should spend more time outside.

What never ceases to amaze me is the way UK so often looks to the US for healthcare solutions, when there are countries closer to home (in Europe) that have far better solutions - ok, they're not without their problems & also have cost issues, but at least they're patient-centric

I'm quite partial to a chuckle, for example

"Two bowed and toothless old almsmen then looked at each other and chuckled" - Far from the Madding Crowd

"Oldtime corridor hepcats will chuckle fondly at descriptions of von Göll" - Gravity's Rainbow

I'm quite partial to a chuckle now and then, but I shall bear the anti-chuckle cohort in mind from now on

This from my fantasy WIP for kids:

Henry ignored her taunts, as if he hadn’t even heard her. There were far more pressing things on his mind. In the darkest corners of his imagination, the tiger still prowled through the jungle hunting down the buffalo.

#WIPSnips | hunt

From my post-apocalyptic #WIP w/ a misfit trio of kids.

Writing snippet: “Ain't no humanity left in this world,” she muttered.

“And yet here you are,” Amos said, gesturing at the food. “Sitting at our table. Breaking bread.” He bit a chunk out of the loaf and handed the rest of it to her. “What would you call that?”

She scoffed. “Pity.”

He stared at her for a moment. She kept her eyes down, and he shook his head. “All right then, Lennie, say it's pity. Think sharks have pity on their prey? How about a pack of starving dogs? Ever seen one turn on its master?” He leaned in. “Because I have. Starving animals care for two things only: the hunt and the kill.”

“I seen people kill,” she whispered.

“And I've seen starving fathers give the last of their food to their children. I've seen mothers squeeze the last drops of water from a cloth into their child’s mouth. I've seen strangers sacrifice themselves for people they hardly knew.” He sat back. “I bet you've seen some of that too.”

She picked at the loaf with her fingernail, flaking off some of the burnt crust.

“And maybe you're here because someone took pity on you.” He pointed to the closed cabin door. “She didn't have to take you in. She chose to. And maybe it was pity, maybe something else, but I'll tell you this. Pity is a distinctly human emotion.” He pushed a glass of water toward her and she lifted her eyes at last. “So, you being here? Hell. I'd say there's a bit of humanity left after all.”

There's hardly a town or village in the whole of Alsace (and the neighbouring Black Forest & Switzerland) that is not built around beautiful half-timbered houses like this in Colmar for instance

The cynic in me can't help feeling Gerry is likely a bit of a pain. But you're right, there's a lot of sense to be gleaned here, and I should pay more attention to the lessons of this article.

If this country was truly “pro-life,” we would have Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, gun reform, universal child care, and a living wage.

The right-wing agenda isn’t about “life.”

It’s about control.

It's more likely that his words were taken out of context, misquoted or whatever. It is the Express, after all. And it's impossible to imagine John Curtice making such a sweeping statement when there are still almost 4 years to go until the next election.
