Atom Egoyan is especially slept on as an auteur. His film output can sometimes be spotty but when he’s on, he’s incredible. I’d happily rank him among my all time fave filmmakers.

He recently directed Amanda Seyfried in the film Seven Veils and it’s great. One of Seyfried’s best performances yet!

I haven't seen anyone mention Bon Cop Bad Cop yet - and even if they have, it bears repeating!

Also:

Highway 61; Hard Core Logo (both Bruce McDonald)
Margaret's Museum (Mort Ransen)
New Waterford Girl (Allan Moyle)

Right now you can self host your PDS (the content storage) but a lot of the “front end” isn’t even hosted with Bluesky so you have to trust that those interfaces will remain online.

It’s still early days and I suspect this will shift and evolve. (Leaflet is doing a lot of good work.)

Has anyone mentioned Bruce Beresford's BLACK ROBE yet? That one's kind of a bummer but it is very fine I think.

Ghost.io is probably the closest to Substack af the moment in terms of being able to monetize and self host on a Digital Ocean droplet (they also have hosted options but I know some people have had issues there so donate and self host is better for some.)

Due to Link’s permaban it also makes sense if you have no faith in the future of this AT proto platform. That’s a correct way to go too.

Nobel discourse today is just silly so some more thoughts on Seiobo There Below. I love this book for a couple of reasons. One is that it's so blatantly *about* a big concept (beauty) and goes about examining it in such rich, unexpected ways that you truly feel like you've learned something new.

Okay can I just say that Krasznahorkai's Seiobo There Below is truly one of my absolute favourite novels ever.

Yeah this new negative option email is totally invasive as well. I have a Notes list of the writers I liked on Substack and go to their websites or Bluesky accounts instead as a workaround.
