9 months into my PhD and I realise managing three social media platforms is a longshot 😂 lesson learned. Had a bit of a lull, but now that I'm doing some fieldwork, you will have more regular updates!

A research focus has been identified! 🔍 After diving deep into all that we know about hedges, we have decided to study root systems inside Cornish hedges, how they are distributed, and how they contribute to global carbon sequestration 🌳 but why roots? 🧐 Stay tuned!

Last December, I got a chance to watch this beautiful film about Kerdroya - a labyrinth that celebrates the 4,000 year history of Cornish hedges. Kerdroya is built as a blend of varied Cornish hedge styles that you will find across Cornwall!

Hedges are home to wildflowers, woodland trees, lichen, mosses, mushrooms, insects, birds, mammals, and much more! They foster a complex little ecosystem along the borders of land that is otherwise heavily managed for farming and construction.

Had the opportunity to explore the "Flora: 150 Years of Environmental Change" exhibition curated by Kurt Jackson at @penleehousegallery.bsky.social!
It was brilliant seeing plant life of the Cornish landscape freeze-framed through the centuries!

Never did I think the words "Bake your PhD" would fall upon my ears 😂🎂The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (DEES) Bake Off was a brilliant and delicious way to learn about the work of my colleagues! And yes, here's a Cornish hedge cake!

I had the absolute pleasure to learn the 4000 year old practice of Cornish hedge building with the Cornwall Rural Education and Skills Trust CIO (CREST)! Rows of stone packed in with soil, these structures can last for hundreds of years...

What are these "woody features" that I'll be studying? Well, think of rows of trees, hedges, stone banks with plants growing on them (more on the Cornish hedge soon!). But why call them "Forgotten Forests"? (See part 2)

I'm so excited to have started a PhD in Geography at @uniexecec.bsky.social! The "Forgotten Forests" project will uncover the value of woody features in the Cornish landscape!
Weekly posts about the project coming up here and on my Science Twitter!
