Queensland SOE report on invasive flora seems to be question begging

It reports progress on declared weeds not impact of invasive plants on the environment.

Hence buffel grass or other undeclared invasives are not treated as threats.

Groundwater is free in the NT and the Productivity Commission benchmarked the NT’s water allocation plans as basically Australia’s worst and going backwards so applications like this are inevitable.

Groundwater aquifer extraction is remarkably a greater source of sea level rise than ice melting. A new application for 4-5GL pa water licence at Dungowan station for water hungry cotton shows the global plunder is upon the NT.

Mparntwe Alice Springs burning due to buffel grass again. The old trees are disappearing :(

Meanwhile the cattle industry can and does seed buffel anywhere except in SA

Great new review describing the many ways altered fire regimes harm species (and country).

From here it highlights the many tragic pathways by which buffel grass invasion destroys.

Central Queensland Uni adjunct professor of environmental geography Steve Turton said the region was nearing its "thermal limits" for cropping and cattle, effectively ending the food bowl dream.

Yet the NT is pushing ahead with public spending for ‘Ord Stage 3’

Depletion of arid zone aquifers is happening globally. Australian aquifers are in the firing line.

“In some areas, the land is subsiding by up to 30cm per year. This is a disaster and shows that the water beneath our feet is running out.”

Masoud Pezeshkian says subsidence is also ‘a disaster’ in city of 10 million, which consumes quarter of Iran’s water

Israel has just arrested Greta Thunberg and many others.

Statement from the Global Sumud Flotilla:

“People of conscience have been abducted. The flotilla broke no laws. What is illegal is Israel’s genocide, Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza, and Israel’s use of starvation as a weapon.”

Close to 65k watching the livefeed from the Global Sumud Flotilla off the coast of Gaza.

Israel seems to be intercepting right now.

All eyes needed.

#FOI requests granted in full have plummeted under @albomp.bsky.social.

His response? Introduce a Bill into Parliament that substantially expands the information officials can withhold from you. How’s that for transparency? #auspol

We drove from Mpartnwe (Alice Springs) to Borroloola, saw a dingo on the way in and then found this book at Waralungku Art Centre waralungku.com!

Not always so tough on crime in the NT.
This person escaped jail time and is also a relative of the NT attorney-general.

‘NT Supreme Court heard Danby boasted about the crash afterwards, calling the victims "dogs" and "oxygen thieves" in texts to friends’

Surface water evaporates pretty quickly in arid and seasonally arid areas hence groundwater dependent ecosystems’ (GDEs) extra significance.
letterscentral.bsky.social
New case card calls for arid zone GDEs’ listing as matter of National Environmental Significance under the EPBC Act. With growing pressure from big ag & climate change plus concentrations of listed species and ecological communities the case is strong

Hmmmm. The third greatest cause of threats to threatened taxa is in charge of managing the first biggest threat.

Our national biosecurity system protects environmental assets worth $5.7 trillion, 1.6m jobs, ag, forestry and fisheries exports worth $75.6b international tourism worth $50b. Yet responsibility for biosecurity sits with Ag Mins who hand review over to a meat industry doyen. Results are predictable.
