if you're here you're here for 1 of 3 things: media criticism, dialectical materialism, or unhinged reposts of what i like.

ae/2501/maeth. do you know what the difference is between someone society treats as real and someone they treat as fictional? it's whether they experience consequences for how they use them. they can do anything they want to you if they know you don't really exist. so: do you know if you're real?

Art doesn’t get censored because it might make people immoral or violent. It gets censored because it might make them realize that there are different ways to live than the prescribed hegemony crammed down our throats
A key point in Fahrenheit 451 is that books were banned because they made people depressed and uncomfortable. The novel's protagonist, Montag, is taken into custody after he reads a poem that makes a woman cry because she realizes the emptiness of her life.

eminently believable take from the *wall street* journal, tbh, pretty sure they've even run an article insisting this is true because they interviewed CEOs and stockbrokers and thus Real Economy Understanders like this before, and probably more than once. provably horseshit but it never stops 'em!
An unbelievable take from the Wall Street Journal.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of finding one constructive real world offline thing you can do to use your particular skills in service of fighting fascism as a psychological defense against the constant drumbeat of fuckery
my hot take is that I don't think it's this website specifically that's toxic. the Circumstances are toxic and nobody really knows what to do about it so they come online and scream. and if I may offer an alternative: actually going outside and screaming feels better.

not 24 hours past and we have reached "feminist critique has failed women and is totally opposed to women's actual rights to be sexy" as some people's sincere "leftist" conclusion from it all, already. oh ariana we are *not* making it out of this decade alive are we

This was a good thread. Seeing a lot of people who are struggling to find ways to give back and not seeming to realize THEY are the ones who need mutual aid!

So many caregivers in this thread doing it alone, without resources or community to lean on. Love y'all.
Sincere question and I hope we can make a safe place for this discussion, are there people out there who feel like they don't know how to get involved and make a difference?

What do you feel like the barriers are for you getting involved in organizing?

Have you tried and failed?

My personal guiding question remains this:

What have I done to alleviate suffering today?

Convinced that being able to answer that affirmatively each night is what has powered me through the past few years, and lets me sleep at night.
As daily goals, "stop fascism," "defeat evil," and "save the world" probably aren't going to get you anywhere, and might leave you feeling overwhelmed and helpless, but "work towards building something good" is always achievable, concrete, and useful.

wittig's "lesbians are not women" has sort of lost its luster in the era of the sex/gender distinction. it's far more provocative and politically useful to conceptualize the statement today as "lesbians are not female" if anything
