#ArtAdventCalendar #SciArt Artwork of the gas-giant exoplanet HD209458b, also known as Osiris. It orbits its star in just 3.5 days at only 1/8 of the Mercury-Sun distance, and is gradually being evaporated away. The system lies 159 light-years away in the constellation Pegasus.
This is an artwork of a gas-giant exoplanet that orbits so close to its star that its atmosphere is being stripped away by the star's fierce ultraviolet flux. The planet goes by the catalogue name of HD 209458b, and is also known as Osiris. Osiris orbits its star at only one-eighth of the Mercury-Sun distance, with a period of 3.5 days, and has an estimated surface temperature of around 1000 degrees Celsius. The system lies 159 light-years away in the constellation Pegasus.

Proxima is the nearest star to the Sun. It is a red dwarf, 1/5 the size of our Sun and 20,000 times dimmer. Here we see it seen from the surface of one of its planets. To the left one can also make out Alpha Centauri, which is a binary star with two Sun-like components.

Next FTL: Faster than Light ship I've done a take on: the Federation Scout. This model isn't as detailed as the hero ship, but I still wanted to give it its own scene. Here a trio of scouts chase Rebel drones out of an asteroid field to protect a hidden base.

I wanted it to have an interesting silhouette from those angles too, so I gave it down-swept wings and a hull that is lower in the front than back. When landed, the engine nacelles sit low on short landing gear while a longer leg extends from below the cockpit with a ladder for boarding. The final model also includes airlocks on each side of the forward hull.

Been getting back into Blender, and here's one result: my take on the Kestrel from the 2012 game FTL: Faster than Light.
The Kestrel is the only 3D element, everything else is painted in CSP. The Rebel ships are edited sprites from the game.

A Kestrel from FTL shoots down a Rebel ship with its Burst Lasers, leaving a Star Wars-like explosion. A dim, blue nebula and stars are in the distance, motion blurred as though the camera is following the Kestrel. ___ The idea of presenting the Kestrel like this was largely inspired by EC Henry's videos on YouTube, as I really like the clips and illustrations on his channel. Top-down isometric view of my Kestrel model. I wanted to keep is as close to the original as I could in terms of detail locations and silhouette, while adding a couple of touches from earlier concept art from the game. The ship's paint job is worn down like it has already seen action, revealing the metal hull plating underneath the off-white and orange paint job. Side view of the Kestrel. The cockpit sits a bit lower than the aft section of the ship, and the neck connecting it curves upwards underneath. I wanted to give it an interesting silhouette from the side and not wind up with what might as well be the game sprite extruded down and left that way, flying around in much the same way bricks don't. I also made a couple of roundels on the aft and side of the cockpit to represent the Federation. The original Kestrel sprite from the game.

Fan art from 2022: The Magnificent Kotobuki is pretty much an airplane western with a dash of sci-fi, so it's as good a reason as any to paint airplanes and wormholes all in one. ✈️

#spaceart from last year, a study into what Jupiter's Great Red Spot might look like from a view just outside of it. Here we're in a trough between where it rises above lower cloud decks and the adjacent storm bands.

The Spot rises about 8km above the surrounding cloud bands, and we are further below that, allowing the edges of the storm to rise from the haze like a mountain nearly 3 times higher than Kilimanjaro. A smaller high pressure system roils even further down, a tiny anticyclone being eaten by its Earth-wide counterpart. Green-tinted lightning flashes within it. To the left, the underside of adjacent cloud bands can be seen, while above the high pressure system, another cloud deck of scattered white clouds and thunderheads drifts along. Io and Europa are visible beyond the horizon.
