The Cathedral of Cologne with its intricate entrance in my frame, the stunning colors of its stained glass windows and the arc of the Three Wise Men, said to hold their bones. Checked off my bucket list but I’d love to go again!
The Cathedral of Cologne with its intricate entrance in my camera frame. This engraved portico depicts each of the 12 apostles on pedestals, 6 on one side, 6 on the other with seraphim and cherubim as well as the Holy Mother among its six pointed arches above the huge dark heavy entry door. This photo shows the golden carved arc that is said to hold the bones of the three Wise Men. It is in the rectangular shape with an equally intricate “roof” to emulate a cathedral. There are several holy men engraved on the arc, which appear to be bishops or popes. There are baroque feathers and scrolls on the arc around the edges as well as intricate inlaid marble pieces that seem to allude to different geographic areas. They seem Arabic, African and Asian. The entire arc is sealed is a glass case on a marble stand. There is a fence around the arc so you can’t reach it. I took these photos with my zoom lens. A side view of the same arc. Just stunning! This is a close up of one of the cathedral’s stained glass windows. The colors of emerald green, cardinal red, bright lapis lazuli blue and gold drape the robes of the four apostles here below the scene of taking Jesus off the cross, the Pietá. The frame itself is divided into three scenes: the top appears to be a depiction of the cathedral as well as the glory of Hod the Father greeting His Son after death. The middle section is the pietá scene and the bottom is four saints (apostles) each with his own golden frame.
