Good news! Last night a court ordered the federal government to return the search-and-rescue helicopter to Newport while the lawsuit is underway.

This is a big win for public safety in our coastal communities – and a reminder that the government must follow the law.
“The Court has issued a temporary restraining order restoring the helicopter to Newport. With crab season about to begin, the helicopter provides critical protections for residents and workers along the coast who put their lives at risk on the water in their daily work. This is a reminder that public safety comes first and the government must follow the law.”

BREAKING NEWS: AG Rayfield announces lawsuit to return Newport’s search-and-rescue helicopter AG Dan Rayfield today announced that the State of Oregon, together with Lincoln County and the Newport Fishermen’s Wives organization, are filing lawsuits to compel the federal government to return the Coast Guard search-and-rescue helicopter abruptly removed from the Newport Air Facility. The Fishermen’s Wives and Lincoln County filed their lawsuit today; the State will file its lawsuit on Monday. The State’s lawsuit will argue that the removal of the helicopter violates federal statutory requirements and standards that mandate public notice, community input, and formal risk assessments before the Coast Guard may downgrade or relocate an air station or essential rescue asset. Those processes were not followed. For nearly four decades, the Newport-based helicopter has been a lifeline for coastal residents, fishermen, and visitors. Its sudden, unannounced overnight removal to North Bend—without any public notice, community consultation, or the risk assessments required under federal law—has left one of the most dangerous stretches of the Pacific Coast without timely aerial rescue coverage. Community members, local officials, and commercial fishermen have voiced deep concern that relocating the helicopter farther from Newport will significantly increase emergency response times.

We will always stand up for due process. That's why we are challenging the Trump administration’s expansion of the “expedited removal” policy, which would allow them to deport people without due process anywhere in the country. This is absolutely unacceptable.

In an amicus brief, the coalition argues that the expansion of “expedited removal” could harm families, public safety, and the economy, while increasing racial profiling and deterring immigrants from seeking healthcare or reporting crimes.

AG Rayfield & DA Barton announce pilot program to strengthen public safety and tackle crime Today, Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield, in partnership with Washington County District Attorney Kevin Barton, announced the launch of SPIRE: a first-of-its-kind statewide pilot program designed to take on complex criminal activity that crosses jurisdictions and benefits from a coordinated, multi-agency response. The idea for SPIRE — which stands for Special Projects: Investigate, Respond, Enforce — grew out of conversations with communities across Oregon about the types of crime families are facing. One theme emerged repeatedly: Oregon’s public safety challenges are not “one size fits all,” and communities need a statewide structure that supports — not replaces — local efforts. “These organized crime enterprises prey on some of the most vulnerable Oregonians. From illicit massage parlors and drug trafficking to crime rings skimming SNAP benefits and stealing catalytic converters. We’ve heard loud and clear from Oregonians that organized crime is showing up in our communities. The SPIRE program is our response. This is DOJ stepping up to make sure we’ve left no stone unturned to tackle these problems and keep our communities safe.”

We must protect our public lands.

That’s why we took formal action to oppose the U.S. Dept. of the Interior’s proposal to rescind a landmark regulation that allows the Bureau of Land Management to lease land for conservation, restoration, and climate change mitigation purposes.

Today, we announced a settlement releasing hundreds of Oregon homeowners from deceptive 40-year contracts with MV Realty.

This was an outrageous scheme that took advantage of Oregonians who were just trying to get a little financial breathing room.

AG Rayfield Announces Settlement Releasing Hundreds of Homeowners from Deceptive 40-Year Contracts with MV Realty Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield today announced a major settlement with MV Realty, a Florida-based real estate brokerage that used deceptive and coercive marketing to trap Oregon homeowners in 40-year “Homeowner Benefit Agreements.” The agreements gave MV Realty exclusive rights to list consumers’ homes for decades—often in exchange for just a few hundred dollars—and allowed the company to file liens that blocked families from refinancing, selling, or accessing the equity in their own property. If MV Realty had enforced its “early termination fees” on all active Oregon agreements, homeowners would have faced more than $7.9 million in penalties—over ten times the cash MV Realty initially paid them. MV Realty must release all 669 active Homeowner Benefit Agreements in Oregon and has no remaining interest in any Oregon property. “This was an outrageous scheme that took advantage of Oregonians who were just trying to get a little financial breathing room,” said Attorney General Dan Rayfield. “For a few hundred bucks, MV Realty tried to trap people in their 40-year contracts that stuck to their homes – and even their kids. CONSUMER ALERT: EBT card skimming is spiking in the Coos Bay area - with over 40 incidents reported in the past 5 days.
CONSUMER ALERT: Spike in EBT card skimming in Coos Bay area What happened: Today, AG Dan Rayfield issued a consumer alert following reports of widespread theft of EBT card funds affecting residents in the Coos Bay area. Since Nov. 8, the Coos Bay Police Dept. has received reports from 41 residents whose SNAP benefits were stolen and fraudulently spent outside of Oregon. How EBT skimming works: Investigators say suspects will install a small device or overlay on a store point of sale machine or card reader that captures magnetic stripe data and the PIN when an EBT card is swiped. With that data and PIN, thieves can clone cards and make remote purchases, often using SNAP benefits at stores in other states, before victims notice their benefits are wiped out.

We just re-crunched the numbers, and our federal oversight work has protected *$4.5 billion dollars* in federal funds coming into Oregon so far.
 
These dollars go to education programs, public health grants, transportation infrastructure, and more that Oregonians rely on.
