Hey Bluesky! Just started on here, hopeful for some good conversations. Sharing these replies on nationalism as a thread.
I haven't listened to the interview, but this was my exact impression when I reviewed his book. www.libertarianism.org/columns/vice...

This is a phenomenal essay from @jkuznicki.bsky.social and one of the very best pieces I've ever read on nationalism, meaning, and the stories we tell ourselves. My only criticism is that I wish it were longer. I highly recommend people check it out.
We often hear about how we’re all related to Charlemagne or Genghis Khan, but everyone’s also closely related to all the people they oppressed.

Human history is messy, and caring for your ancestors should point us all towards an egalitarian society.

If you want great in-depth analysis of why Hazony’s ideas boil down to blood and soil nationalism, I highly recommend the work of @paulmatzko.bsky.social and @akivamalamet.bsky.social in this thread.

Highly recommended, and not because Aaron is a friend (or my multiple appearances). RL is an unusually deep, reflective, charitable, and wide ranging space for important conversations on the past, present, and future of a free and open society from the philosophical to the highly applied.
If you want a thoughtful podcast that calmly digs into the ideologies behind our contemporary politics, and charts a humane, cosmopolitan, and liberal path forward, you'll likely enjoy my own ReImagining Liberty. I get brilliant guests and have focused conversations about politics and ideas.

Listening to @ezraklein.bsky.social’s interview of Yoram Hazony and struck by the fact that Hazony isn’t just bad at nationalism; he’s also bad at understanding his faith. His scriptures are filled with outsiders being grafted into tribes by acts of faith and creedal commitment (e.g., Ruth, Rahab).
