Scary looking beasts, but it been a long time since I have seen one of these... A Devil's coach horse #beetle in the garden this week. Nice!

Congratulations to William Brame @landguardbirder.bsky.social for realising this was a different white butterfly. Now confirmed by @chrisvanswaay.bsky.social as a Southern Small White - the first seen in England. As it is a female let's hope it has been laying eggs. @matthewberry.bsky.social

Great to see two (less than common) butterflies using the embankment at Tucking Mill. These grassland butterflies will appreciate the work carried out by Sustrans and Bath Two Tunnels volunteers early last month. @twotunnelsbath.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social @sustrans.bsky.social

Insects are being bulldozed by poor planning! 🚧🐞

Buglife's latest blog highlights how development is wiping out vital bug habitats. We must do better to protect these essential creatures!

Sir Keir has misrepresented the impact of conservation on housing in Ebbsfleet. The majority of the homes are going ahead. The distinguished jumping spider isn’t even in the development area, but it is a precious habitat. Let's move beyond nature vs. growth - sustainable development benefits us all.

Ok, not the most blue of #BlueBugs but it does have a blueish iridescent sheen in the right light. There is one short stretch of footpath near Tucking Mill, Bath where I regularly see this robust insect, a Bloody-nosed beetle, bumbling along in broad daylight. #BlueMonday

With warmer weather, a few of our species will start to emerge from hibernation, including the Marsh Fritillary, whose highly visible black 4th instar larvae can be found in small groups at good sites. I cannot wait!

In 2024 alone, we restored 3,700 hectares of peatland which was degraded due to historic air pollution, wildfires and drainage.

Our efforts saw the return of the black darter – the UK's smallest dragonfly – to Dartmoor, Devon and the first ever fledging of a crane at Wicken Fen, Cambridge.

One way to beat the winter blues is to go egg hunting, with 4 of our 5 hairstreaks overwintering in this stage (Green Hairstreak overwinters as a pupa). This week will see me looking for Purple Hairstreak eggs that are usually found at the base of plump oak buds on south-facing, woodland edge trees.
