Happy Thanksgiving (Canadian version). An idyllic time in eastern Ontario: the harvest is mostly in and the mosquitos are asleep, but it’s not snowing yet…

My early morning eyes first read this as “LOL”. Which would be a hell of a way to start Beowulf…

Delightful encounter on my walk. A lady stopped to tell me I was “the most dapper man she had ever seen in this city”.
Which is pretty good for a decrepit old man in an ancient tweed jacket!

It’s that time of year again—respiratory illness season is coming.
The good news? Current levels of COVID-19, influenza (flu), and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are all still low.
If you haven’t checked it out yet (or need a refresher), our Respiratory Dashboard is live and updated weekly.(1/2)

Got outside for an amble to the hardware store. Made good use of several park benches on the way there and back to rest and bask in the sunshine.

Time to update your Palaeolithic palettes... 🔵

Very proud to share our new research on the OLDEST use of blue pigment! We identified traces of azurite - a vibrant blue mineral - on a stone object around 14-13,000 years old. Why is this so exciting? 👇🏺

doi.org/10.15184/aqy...
Close-up image of a sand coloured stone, with a diagonal crack. The sand rock has a textured surface, and small spots of blue can be seen towards the centre of the stone. The background is grey. Microscopic photo of the blue spots, that are irregular in shape and size and positioned diagonally across the image. The rest of the photo shows the rough sand coloured texture of the stone.

New (to me) paintbox! Passed on by a friend who had inherited it. Only two tubes had hardened & had to be thrown out. Most seem from the late ‘60s / early ‘70s, but a couple look older. A good selection for landscape painting. Will try them out tomorrow.
Photo of a small old wooden artist’s paintbox with a leather handle. It holds over a dozen tubes of oil paint, some of them stained, a palette knife and one small paintbrush.

Mostly horizontal today, but worked for a while on the last step in finishing my new cane. Adjusted the length for a perfect fit when I’m wearing my usual shoes, then tapered the end to fit a brass tip.
Close photo of the bottom end of a walking stick on a workbench showing the fit between the shaft and the brass tip. A black rubber cap is also on the bench, ready to be fit over the brass.

I will accept her judgement ahead of some others who have critiqued my methodology…
