I've always hated that the phrase "FOI nerd" exists. The whole principle of freedom of information is that the information belongs to everyone, the public. You should not require specialist knowledge the navigate the process. But the reality is you do, and it's so clearly that way by design.

If I had filed a complaint within the 60-day limit, I probably would have gotten this (junk) sooner. The fact is the formal complaint process is literally the only way you got documents from most federal institutions.

The best part: They get mad when I've acquired direct line emails to individuals in the ministry and have attempted to contact them that way.

What conclusion is one supposed to draw from this other than that they regard their transparency obligations and journalists with utter contempt?

The same institutions (including Global Affairs Canada) will also often take 2 weeks or more to respond to really simple media requests. 99% of the time, the statements they produce are empty drivel.

Today I received an Access to Information request package from Global Affairs Canada.

I filed the request 2 years and 10 months ago. The package consisted of four pages, two of which were redacted 👍
