Now, three years later, Kate steps into the familiar Saturday morning surf with Lucky already positioned on his board. His board. The one they'd spent an entire evening making alterations on.

It had been Lucy's idea, actually. She'd noticed how Lucky's paws would sometimes slip on the waxed surface.

“What about grip tape?” she had suggested one night, showing Kate her phone screen. “We could customize the placement for his paws.”

“Is this really necessary?” Lucy asks, but there's amusement in her voice.

“Absolutely.” Kate turns around to survey their setup. The coffee table sits pushed against the wall, replaced by an air mattress positioned directly in front of the couch. Blankets and pillows cover every surface, creating the kind of nest that screams “we're not leaving this spot for at least six hours.” “Sci-fi movies require proper ambiance. You can't properly appreciate the visual cinematography in daylight.”

Lucy shakes her head, but she's smiling as she carries over two massive bowls of popcorn. “You're such a nerd.”

“You married this nerd.”

Fanta blinks up at her with those innocent olive green eyes, letting out a tiny chirp as if to say, “Hi Mom!”

Lucy's eyebrows shoot up, her mouth dropping open before breaking into a surprised laugh. “Best delivery ever. Forget DoorDash, you brought me something way better!”

They round the corner to find both sandwiches on the floor, the fillings scattered across the hardwood. Lucky sits exactly where they left him, tail still swooshing on the floor, looking between them and the mess with an expression that clearly says “I didn't do it.”

“Oh, come on,” Lucy groans, looking up at the coffee table where Fanta sits primly, paws tucked under him like a perfect little loaf. She shakes her head at her own unintentional pun. His whiskers twitch with what she swears is satisfaction.

We commend the Philly school district and urge others to follow suit.

Philly schools will continue to allow transgender athletes to participate in sports that match their gender identity
