Choosing HC as my first book in a quest of Actually Reading More Authors For The First Time In Years is genius bc Maria Ying is in fact TWO authors at once! And going outside the official stuff then lands two MORE authors. It's like padding out sentences in essays to meet the word count :D

I liked every chapter ofc, but the standout ones were those that focused on minor characters who sit outside the main handful in HC: Adrastus and Siproites, Madalithea and Celadion, Aphrodite's shenanigans, it's like a supplement that makes the world feel bigger, realer, worth fighting for

I think the most telling thing about this show that will stick with me is that Inara's demands to stop being called a whore by Reynolds are uniformly ignored, but the moment she calls him a petty thief he throws a fit and she has to apologise and console him. This is a recurring thing.

It's fun in all the ways you generally expect a western to be fun, with the only interesting thing about it being it's in space. It's a 2002 show so I'm not going to fault it for production value.

I will, however, fault it for the uncomfortably copious amounts of misogyny. Like holy shit
