Hello Bluesky! 👋

We are AmnestyEU & we advance human rights through our work with the EU institutions, the Council of Europe & their member states. If human rights in Europe is what you're into, follow us to keep up to date with it all!

The fight for LGBTIQ+ equality is not just the fight of one community, it is everyone’s fight.

Amnesty will always uphold the rights of LGBTIQ+ people and fight for a European Union that protects freedom, equality and dignity for all.

@hadjalahbib.bsky.social’s clear recognition that so-called ‘conversion practices’ cause severe harm &are direct attacks on a person’s dignity is also positive.

Now it’s time for the Commission to turn this recognition into swift & concrete action to ban these harmful practices once and for all.

We welcome @hadjalahbib.bsky.social's personal commitment to making progress on equal access to healthcare, education, housing and employment. It is time for a robust Equal Treatment Directive!

We fully agree with @ilgaeurope.bsky.social that its impact will depend on how the Commission acts in practice: “Coherence and credibility depend not on declarations of intent, but on consistent enforcement of EU law and values.”🔥🔥🔥

It speaks of tackling online & offline hate, fighting gender-based violence, strengthening equality bodies, supporting civil society & many other essentials.

These commitments must be rapidly translated into bold, concrete and coordinated action from the EU & its member states.

📢 @amnesty.org and @omegarf.bsky.social call on
@coe.int to fully implement these recommendations.

No member state should permit or benefit from the trade in pain and suffering.
#TortureFreeTrade

❗️Crucially, the Committee of Ministers reiterates its support for the development of an international legally binding instrument on torture-free trade.

The @coe.int agreed to:
▪️Review lists of prohibited and controlled goods
▪️Develop guidance on best practice in law enforcement equipment trade fairs
▪️Develop the CoE Platform on Human Rights and Business
amnestyeu.bsky.social
The review found progress in some CoE states but identified serious challenges such as the misuse of equipment during the policing of public assemblies and the emergence of new types of goods and equipment which require regulation.

@amnesty.org welcomes the @coe.int decision toward torture- & death penalty-free trade.

After a review of CM/Rec(2021)2 on measures against trade in goods used for the death penalty & torture, @coe.int committed to further efforts to control this trade worldwide.

🚨 ICYMI - a new @amnesty.org report out last week

On how China’s courts are used as a tool to silence journalists, activists, lawyers and citizens - often for nothing more than their peaceful expression.

⚖️ Our research on 68 cases shows systematic fair trial violations.

The EU must stop disregarding human lives in the name of border control and ensure that any external cooperation guarantees effective human rights scrutiny and oversight on the use of EU funds.

The EU and Italy must suspend cooperation with Libya on migration control, including by ending Italy’s Memorandum of Understanding with Libya due for renewal on 2/11 and ensure that Libyan authorities effectively investigate the attacks & hold perpetrators accountable.
amnestyeu.bsky.social
In the face of this new incident, and despite civil society calls for accountability & for an end to European complicity in horrific human rights violations at sea & in Libya, @ec.europa.eu has merely reaffirmed its policy of cooperation with the country.

The LCG has long been responsible for reckless and violent conduct causing refugees’ and migrants’ deaths and endangering NGO rescuers.

This escalation is yet another illustration of the terrible consequences of European and Italian cooperation with Libya on migration control.

Last week, the EU-backed Libyan Coast Guard (LCG) fired live ammunition at a @sea-watch.org vessel during a rescue mission overnight between 25/26 September, just one month after the LCG fired on a rescue ship from @sosmediterranee.org.

The EU must not stay silent as Hungary criminalizes Pride and violates human rights.

On 4 October, standing up for #PécsPride means standing up for the #RuleOfLaw, #HumanRights, dignity & equality in Europe.
amnestyeu.bsky.social
We also call on the @europarl.europa.eu, EU Member States & leaders to:
📢Publicly condemn the ban
📢Show solidarity with the organizers & community
📢Join #PécsPride to defend the right to assembly in Hungary
amnestyeu.bsky.social
We urge the EU to:
📢Use all enforcement tools to lift the ban and protect organizers & participants
📢Stop Hungary from applying this law in Pécs
📢Launch an accelerated infringement procedure against Hungary’s abuse of facial recognition technology
amnestyeu.bsky.social
The ban on #PécsPride breaches the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and undermines EU values.

The @ec.europa.eu has already found the new law’s legal basis unlawful in the ongoing CJEU case C-769/22.

It must act decisively now!
amnestyeu.bsky.social
❗️Even #BudapestPride, where hundreds of thousands marched for equality, is still under attack.

❗️Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony is facing criminal charges for organizing it - a chilling signal that no Pride is safe in today’s Hungary.

Police already banned diverse assemblies: from protests on the ban on legal gender recognition to commemorations of LGBTI Holocaust victims.

This law violates the #HumanRights of LGBTI people, such as:
▪️Equality & non-discrimination
▪️Freedom of expression
▪️Freedom of assembly & association
▪️Right to privacy
