Supermarkets in the UK tend to have a policy of not accepting returns of food due to the contamination/tampering risk. So I would have called the supermarket, and they would have likely said to keep it anyway.

I've done some testing. These UK restrictions can be circumnavigated with a simple VPN or using a non-UK sim in the uk.
