Everyone wants to blame the content: misinformation, bots, polarisation. That mistakes catalysts and symptoms for the underlying causes. The crisis isn’t bad information, it's that the very information infrastructure we relied on to create a shared understand of the world had changed completely.

One reason fewer countries in Europe want to be neutral - only Switzerland and Austria left by and large - is that neutral countries are just as susceptible to asymmetrical warfare but cannot hit back the way an alliance can.
Russia not afraid to take asymmetric war to e.g. the field of religion.

I think Putin will not agree to be on a board under Trump, because Putin needs to be seen as the ultimate alpha by his own population.
He might offer to be co-chair though.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said he is considering U.S. President Donald Trump’s invitation to the Gaza Board of Peace — but did not agree outright.
Putin on Trump’s Gaza peace board invite: Not no
The Kremlin wants to review the document and “consult with our strategic partners.”

I can't decide whether Trump's Bored of Peace is:

a) A joke.

b) A global coalition of Bond villains and an existential threat to peace and democracy everywhere.

c) A global grift operation of hitherto unseen scale.

d) All of the above.

One of the reasons Trump's imperial vision has so much traction is that there are no clear, workable other visions. The Left seems to be veering more left, with the wealth tax proposition in California, rent control in NY and Zack Polanski in the UK, as examples.
The center cannot hold?

'Juncker’s declaration that European leaders “all know what to do, but we don’t know how to get re-elected once we’ve done it” '
Last week, EU top diplomat Kaja Kallas privately summed up what many were thinking: The state of the world makes it a “good moment” to start drinking.

Her comments showed that wisecracks often reveal far more than a carefully crafted speech.

Tempting to view Trump's behaviour as an aberration in American policy. But he can behave like this because many, many Americans approve.
A tideshift of thinking, into being an empire with explicitly vassal states, and an attempt to resurrect masculinity in the face of increasing incel creation.
January 19, 2026 at 10:39 AM
The idea of making an American empire with vassals, not peers, might simply be an attempt from some Americans to make the worldwide increasing risk of inceldom, be smaller to themselves.

White House decision-makers seem to see Europe in the same way Russia does: as weak, corrupted, and easy to coerce. They are going to keep pushing because they think they can, until they find they can't. They are not going to turn the US back into an ally of the rest of NATO.
