There is a lot of talk about higher defense spending in NATO, but I think many politicians have failed to explain adequately why that is necessary. So in this video I explain what is at stake for citizens in Western European countries.
Why spend more on defense in Western Europe?

A really good critique of Europe's behavior towards Ukraine, and towards it's own security. 👇

Another strong quote from the text:

"Nothing about Europe’s position today was inevitable. It is the product of decisions not taken, responsibilities avoided, and illusions clung to for too long. ...
"Too many European governments still behave as if losing Ukraine would be unfortunate but manageable. This is fantasy. The destruction of Ukraine would reshape Europe’s security architecture for decades, and not in Europe’s favour."

This is true for the transatlantic defense relationship. Without shared values, it is more difficult to see a US pledge to risk nuclear war for distant NATO allies as credible.
What Trump has made me realise is how much the post-Cold War relationship hinged on shared values rather than shared interests. Trump is illustrating how, whether on Ukraine and Gaza, our interests diverge and, absent those values, there's not much holding us together.

#dkmedier journalisten.dk/er-jeg-idiot...

Having an area expert at the negotiations seems like a no-brainer.
Looking at this photo of the US-Ukraine Geneva meeting, I wondered who was in the delegation. ABC has the list:

abcnews.go.com/Internationa...

No Russia or Ukraine experts (although US Ambassador to Ukraine Davis & SACEUR Grynkewich were there).

Under Trump's peace plan, these four individuals would of course receive amnesty.

To put this more bluntly, Europe has largely outsourced its foreign policy to America since WWII. This has created the illusion within the EU that foreign policy remains a national “competency.” It’s not. So if Europe wants a bigger voice it needs to speak as Europe.
Europe has a foreign policy problem. It does need to engage in these talks and doing so as 7 or 8 leaders just doesn't work. It makes it easy to work around Europe. So the EU should pick a special envoy - perhaps the fmr Finnish president Niinisto or a Draghi type to engage on behalf of Europe.
No formal "counter-proposal" from Europeans in Geneva - whose leaders instead agreed to try to dilute or amend US-Russian draft to keep Trump onside - but a list of demands on UA territory, size of army & EU control over frozen assets & sanctions

I fear that a lot of elements on European defense (including the nuclear component) will be viewed as politically impossible until the moment they become absolutely necessary, by which point it will be too late.

As @anderspucknielsen.dk has noted, the bad news is that the current "peace proposal" is a "win-win" for Russia. It is a win if it is accepted or the start of further discussions, it is also a win if it is rejected by Ukraine and the EU because relations between Europe and the US will suffer.

My cynical gut reaction to US-Russia negotiated deal is that the Kremlin was very smart. This is a play to divide not just the US and Ukraine but the US and Europe. They made what look like concessions, so they look reasonable. They also threw US some money. But they know Ukraine/EU can't say yes.1/

Exactly. In reality, there is no choice for Zelensky, because accepting Trump's plan is off the table. What this statement is about is mobilizing the public both at home and abroad.
This is Zelensky putting pressure on Trump. He knows Ukrainians don't want to surrender. He's talking to all Americans across the political spectrum who support Ukraine, love freedom, and hate surrender. He's telling them: "you can't allow Trump to align the US with Ru against Europe". Let's see.
NEW: Brutal to watch Zelensky address his nation just now. On the brink of being abandoned by the US.

"Right now is one of the most difficult moments in our history. At this moment, Ukraine may face a very hard choice: either the loss of dignity, or the risk of losing a key partner."
