“Historically, no one lived past age 35”

"I’ve heard *so* many versions of this claim, including recently from a menopause doctor (implying menopause is not “natural” because noone lived long enough to go through it). Every time someone states this “fact,” a demographer loses a piece of their soul"
There Were Still Old People When Life Expectancy Was 35.

but the second port is going to make more money than god
figure between the tariffs and the fact that there's nobody in the government who can issue permits or ensure compliance from industry the whole economy grinds to a complete halt in a few months

Remember back during COVID, when there was a sudden influx of people applying for unemployment benefits?

The New Jersey system crashed ...

... and governor blamed it on old COBOL systems

Nope

He was wrong

the COBOL ran *fine*

It was the newer web-site code that croaked

This idea -- that a really *old* code-base can be far more reliable and rock-solid than something written in a newer language?

It violates a lot of Silicon Valley mythos, of course ...

... where "new" is nearly always seen as "better"

So, the DOGE kids intend to rewrite the social-security administration's COBOL code-base!

and they want to do it ...

... in *a few months*

I did a huge dive into COBOL a few years ago (www.wealthsimple.com/en-ca/magazi...) ...

... so let me explain why DOGE is *way* over its skis here

ok, new rule for 2025: if you're designing an app, NO MORE 6-DIGIT PINs.

you have face ID. I can store a 32-character password in my password manager. do not make me multi-lane-drift between my password manager to type 6 digits in your shitty numpad. thanks.

End-to-end encryption is secure because it protects the contents of your communications in transit between the endpoints. If you make one of those endpoints an editor at The Atlantic, no amount of encryption is going to save you from your own stupidity.

Misleading posts claiming Signal is vulnerable are getting thousands, if not millions, of impressions. This happens frequently, there are attempts to undermine Signal and scare users away from safety. Signal is one of the most secure apps ever made.

Please watch out and let family and friends know.

Thing is, there are secure, government-approved ways of having these conversations that follow legal guidelines for records retention. Signal ain’t that. If they were using Signal for this, they’ve been using Signal for all kinds of other things, probably to avoid recordkeeping. For obvious reasons.

It's really crucial to understand how badly framed this is. There is no Signal vulnerability. The Pentagon email did a bad job explaining a Google report from a month ago and NPR repeated it.

This is like saying because you got a phishing email at your Gmail address, there's a Google vulnerability.
News: NPR’s Tom Bowman reports of a Pentagon-wide warning about Signal’s security vulnerability - one week ago 👇🏼
