Installing wind turbines and solar panels is cool and necessary for the energy transition, but not sufficient.

We’ve had delays with the large spinning masses that provide system strength, so we can’t turn Eraring off.

The best time to build nuclear was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.
As environmentalists, it’s understandable if we feel intense disappointment and perhaps anger at the decision to keep Eraring operating until 2029.

But if we want to see the deep decarbonisation needed to address climate change, then it's time to face hard truths about our energy transition.

When people call apartments “communist” I feel it’s hyperbolic, but until now I thought it was at least original. A fascinating clip in this episode of @mattbevan.bsky.social’s Black Swans series reveals (to me, you probably knew) that the ¼-acre block was thought to attract… youtu.be/qr7oj5_o5x8

We should both provide support for new technologies that avoid using CCS like direct electrification, hydrogen (which is cheapest to produce without emissions using CCS), thermal batteries, etc and support CCS

Because for everyone emission from cement and ammonia today, we need even more...

Turns out, each tree hosts trillions of bacteria in its bark, and these bacteria 'eat' certain gases right out of the air: methane, carbon monoxide, and especially hydrogen.

This is important info because hydrogen helps methane persist longer in the atmosphere.

We discovered microbes in bark ‘eat’ climate gases. This will change the way we think about trees - Southern Cross University
Tree bark microbes quietly “eat” climate‑warming gases, revealing a hidden way trees clean the air and reshaping how we think about forests.

If you’re in Wollongong today it makes no sense to be anywhere other than the Arts Precinct for Honk Oz!

Right now: live workshop for the Hoot band, 60-odd musicians who might or might not be playing in any of the other many groups bringing tunes to the streets!

According to new findings from @transportist.org et al., big SUVs are making traffic jams worse

The authors hypothesize that big cars reduce highway visibility, prompting drivers to give more space to the car ahead. The result: Less vehicle capacity per mile of roadway—and more congestion.
How SUVs Are Making Traffic Worse
As larger, taller sport utility vehicles took over US roads, they also aggravated highway congestion, according to a new study. It’s yet another ill effect of “car bloat.”

Car bloat is limiting driver visibility in other ways, too. For instance, bigger cars require thicker A-pillars (the material btw the windshield and side mirrors).

At intersections, chunky A-pillars can easily conceal a pedestrian or cyclist.
Why Did Cars Get So Hard to See Out Of?
If it seems like forward visibility has gotten worse, you’re right: Since the 1990s, cars and trucks have grown bigger A-pillars that can create dangerous blind spots.

‼️Over 600 stakeholders have now united against the "Veggie Burger Ban"

From NGO's to companies, the message to the EU institutions is clear: consumers are not confused and we don't need costly restrictions that will harm consumers, businesses, and the shift to sustainable foods.

This weekend, WePlanet coordinated a protest against the closure of Doel-2 near Antwerp. The owner, French energy company Engie, wants to get rid of their nuclear assets as they'll be more profitable selling gas for the foreseeable future, to burn when renewables don't deliver.

Press should be reporting accordingly. This whole "X countries support A roadmap" is just bad journalism. So far, "X countries supporting CREATING a roadmap". Whether they'll support and approve one in the next days is another story. Including if it's a roadmap at all.

As expected, overnight, they dropped fossil fuels from the drafts AGAIN.

You can't make this discussion happen last minute during COP30 just to look good (or in hopes that it will lead to a map that lets developing country oil producers drill for longer).

You have to want to focus on it!
Let's be clear: there's not roadmap YET approved at COP30 for the end of fossil fuels.

What many countries are supporting is the INITIATIVE to set the roadmap. Because it was not originally part of the COP30 agenda - a big gap in the agenda that Brazil only last week decided should be addressed.
