What is going on? Apparently someone with access to the #cellbroadcast emergency warning system in #munich is feeling very funny today. Did everyone get this or is it a local phenomenon?
Great week for #CriticalRole fans! Got announcements for several live shows in Europe next year including their first one in Germany, and sneak peeks into not one but two animated series:

So the U.S. library of congress is required by law to maintain two copies of every copyrightable work published in the U.S., but the person responsible for doing so was fired for doing exactly that? Effectively denying copyright to politically inconvenient works is a very dangerous road to go down..
Every book published in the United States is sent to the Library of Congress. Also, if you are under 16 you cannot use the reading room or order books.
Reporter: The president fired the Librarian of Congress. Why?

Leavitt: There were quite concerning things she had done at the Library of Congress in the pursuit of DEI and putting inappropriate books in the library for children.
Just five companies are responsible for nine trillion dollars of #climate change related damages according to this #nature article: rdcu.be/ei3gX

This development in climate attribution could finally allow for litigation of climate liability claims regarding specific local damages.

An insightful interview by @hankgreen.bsky.social w/ Mikey Barat, an Israeli and friend of the recently arrested palestinian student Mosen Madawi. A nice story of an Israeli & a Palestinian finding common ground, but the US administration baselessly swooping in to rip'em apart: youtu.be/FOCjZZhy4Mo

Looks like the public outcry got to them in the end. Nevertheless waayyy to close to a catastrophic outcome. The upcoming 11 months are the time to build alternative infrastructure that can take over if this happens again. We need to make CVEs more resilient and independent. Looking at you EU...
Meh.. How about leaving SSNs alone and coming up with an actual state of the art authentication mechanism instead?

In what world has knowledge of a static nine-digit non-random number ever been a good authentication mechanism? SSNs were never intended to be used as such and it shows...

We should just do what we can to support EUVD (euvd.enisa.europa.eu)

If companies and governments got behind it, the transition can be rapid and smooth.

Well, that's at least something. Let's hope they'll actually manage to save the #cve program...
"CVE Foundation Launched to Secure the Future of the CVE Program"

Please note this is not an official CVE Board action, but the action of a rogue group within the CVE Board to try and save the CVE Program.

Not a good day for #cybersecurity. About time for the EU to fund their own CVE-like program...
BREAKING.

From a reliable source. MITRE support for the CVE program is due to expire tomorrow. The attached letter was sent out to CVE Board Members.

Some police & school officials want you to think the Flipper Zero is a weapon of mass destruction— or, at least, mass distraction. In reality, it poses little threat and can be a learning tool, EFF’s @legind.bsky.social and @zoracon.bsky.social wrote for Deseret.
Opinion: Students’ tech skills should be nurtured, not punished
Subjecting students to the criminal justice system for tech pranks is unjustified and only squelches the kind of curiosity that educators should seek to encourage in students.

Don't enforce privacy or copyright regulation via making public posts unscrapable, but by scrutinizing and fining people doing the scraping and processing of data in an irresponsible or unethical manner. And raise awarenes that posting stuff publicly should be done responsibly in the first place.
Note the 'public' part. As in 'accessible without restrictions'. If we talk about posts restricted to specific groups that's a whole different story. Also noone's exempt from privacy rules, but awareness that you can't control who uses information once it's posted publicly in reality is important.
Honestly, I'd rather a platform hosting unrestricted public information keep an open API and open access to posts, which will always come with people scraping the data for some purpose, than a corporation gatekeep access and sell user data to some rich AI or advertisement company in a backhand deal.
Und es geht tatsächlich nach wie vor. Bin gespannt wie sich die Antworten auf die Frage im Verlauf der nächsten Tage ändern werden. :D
