holy shit, an accurate legal critique of LLMs. LLMs don't reason because they're just stitching together plausible-looking sentences indifferent to the content

I don't know if this makes FIFA or Trump look worse.

North Korea level shit.

I do wonder if the World Cup will further change European public attitudes towards Trump, as it will be watched by millions who don't normally keep up with politics.

How is ICE/Border Patrol going to react to fans?
this shit is just beyond parody, man

The new National Security Strategy is a propaganda document, designed to be widely read. It is also a performative suicide. Hard to think of another great power ever abdicating its influence so quickly and so publicly. It will be worth following the reactions around the world, not just in Europe.
Trump's national security strategy is out and some of the Europe sections are shocking. "...the growing influence of patriotic European parties indeed
gives cause for great optimism."

The new US National Security Strategy makes for scary reading. I wrote about how the US wants to support forces in Europe to tear itself apart back in November 2024, and last May. This NSS confirms that's exactly the US objective for Europe.

Hegseth described the refusal of illegal commands as part of the military’s ethos — a message he now condemns Democrats for spreading.

The US National Security Strategy released overnight has shocked Europeans.

In truth, its plans for Europe are just a reiteration of what the State Department already publicly posted back in May. But Europeans have not wanted to listen.
New US security strategy lays bare European regime change plans
While the Trump administration claims they no longer want the US to "prop up the entire world order like Atlas", in the same document they dictate to Europe what it can and can't do.

Hot take:

I am deeply skeptical of any AI regulation proposal that doesn't actually define "AI".

The term has been used for many decades and applied to many technologies used for many purposes.

Agree with @jomichell.bsky.social here.

My earlier piece: "The claim that that MMT means that a future government can dodge hard choices about how to pay for decent public services is just plain nonsense."

Me: political journalism should spend more time on policy, data and expert, specialised analysis

Also me: puts alerts on @britainelects.com and @electionmaps.uk
I wonder if it's time to retire the role of "political editor" altogether

Return most of the coverage to the Economics Editor, the Health Editor, the Home Affairs team & so on.

Leave the "who-said-what-to-whom" & "what-does-it-mean-for-the-polls" to others. The BBC doesn't need to foreground this.
Watched BBC 6 o clock news. Just a completely unserious broadcast. Chris Mason, acting like a children's entertainer, giving a prolonged impenetrable editorial. Not a whiff of informative content about the Budget or what it means for the country. Just playschool blah blah bollocks.

Tempting as it is to dunk on Farage not recognising Scottish languages, I advise caution:

Firstly, it gives a pass on xenophobia

Secondly, there aren't many Glaswegians who mainly speak Scots, Gaelic or BSL

Petition for public inquiry into Russian influence on UK politics:

As suggested by @nickreeves.bsky.social, quoted in this article, it does seem that there is a particularly high proportion of Welsh signatories.

Presumably because of Nathan Gill.

Senator Kelly is correct.

Plus a Public Service Announcement:

KEY section of Department of Defense's Law of War Manual is 18.3.2.1.

The VERY rule on the "requirement" to refuse illegal orders gives as its paradigmatic example of what is "clearly illegal:
"orders to fire upon the shipwrecked."

Not the main problem, but increasingly thinking we need a moratorium on the term "Artificial Intelligence" (both in full and as "AI") because it's clear it means at least three seriously different things and equivocation between those helps to enable this nonsense.

This working paper from Stanford Institute of Economic Research is damning of Brexit.

Some of the economic cost was incurred by the process itself.

6-8% GDP is a lot to be caused by policy. Half that would be a lot.
