"Vermeule argues that few judges will feel confident addressing varied and complex technical problems on their own." I think that's your point about "results driven." Some of these judges (including on the SC) are very confident of what outcome they want, no matter the complex details.

Absolutely! I'm just saying keep the categories broad. The problem is very complex, so we should encourage innovation across a wide spectrum of topics. We've already seen peace and physics Nobels related to climate, plus the economics prize. Let's do more, across a wider range of topics.

IMO, these are too narrow. The Nobels are for chemistry, physics, medicine, literature, and peace - very broad. Perhaps something like ecosystems, technology, and social science (which maybe too broad). That's not to say that the 5 should not be recognized - they should. But maybe not as Nobels.

I grew up in a small town in NM (~5k people). "Big" cities (20k+) were indeed seen as scary. IMHO, it wasn't race as much as crime reporting. Crime makes the news, normalcy doesn't. Actually visiting or living in truly big cities is very different than the perception, but the perception dies hard.

It's worth considering, but we need to be very clear about what we can and can't know in advance. For instance, projecting the responses of complex ecosystems over century time frames is dicey, to say the least (also true for climate change alone).

The Academies committee did a spectacular job of sticking to the science, demonstrating the solid scientific basis of the Endangerment Finding, and crushing Koonin's 'red team.' The committee's choice to simply review changes in the science since 2009 and avoid the DOE report was simply brilliant.
