Hot take: Using your public library helps fight facism. Don’t buy a book, get it from the library. Or your small local independent bookstore because authors gotta make a living too. But those big box stores? Stop feeding them.

Reading with the President.
I had fun reading to some Burke Elementary students at the Chicago Public Library today. When the Obama Presidential Center opens next year, we’ll have a new branch of the library for the community to enjoy.

31 Days, 31 Lists: 2025 Caldenotts
They're gorgeous! They're glorious! They're amazing! They're... completely ineligible for the Caldecott Award. But that doesn't mean we can't celebrate them in other ways.

As the sun comes up over a lake, the flora and fauna awake. In glorious sunrise colours and varied panels, the reader is treated to a glimpse of nature’s beauty. Accompanied by minimal yet descriptive language, this is one to contemplate slowly.

But what can I do??? Deny your dollars to all who aid, abet and amplify fascism. Let the corporations funding fascism know we #AintBuyingIt.
Spare those resources for local business and/or mutual aid in your community.

I have it on good authority that this is a storytime hit. Crow seems cranky - all the bird does is CAW! But crow will save the world when the call (literally) comes. Delightfully fun illustrations and a repeated Caw! add to storytime charm.

Which came first, the fruit or the colour? Exploring the world of orange, from navel to cheese to bridges, you’ll learn so much about this colour from the author, and Morstad’s illustrations will make you fall in love with the many ways to use it . Excellence in non-fiction.

Need a little history research to start your morning?
Serious question (yes, it can happen):

We all know that a sponge on a stick was used by the Romans for wiping their bums, right? Well, what's the evidence? Seems very impractical to us.

Does anyone know?

Using fold out pages, each month of the year is shown from the perspective of a large estate farm. Plants, animals, garden harvests, temperature, and more are explored for each month. For studies of Seasons, this is a fine title for comparison purposes. Good choice for classroom use.

Marching band across the land, from the city to the beach to outer space, they march their tune, in rhymed text, across richly decorated pages. The illustrations are reminiscent of Richard Scarry, but with a modern feel. It’s a fun storytime choice and kids will love all the details.

A shining example of the visual joke. Dodo goes for a walk in the peaceful jungle, unaware of the tiger following them. Danger escalates, but of course Dodo escapes. The hunter maybe doesn’t fare so well. Lots of fun for storytime, could be a fun mentor text for budding cartoonists.

Squeak the mouse eats some green jelly and turns into Hyde, who can’t stop eating- he even eats the furniture. It’s a wild story, with busy , frenetic pages, that will appeal to cartoon-loving readers.

Using nature comparisons such a wind, sun, rain, stone, a range of emotions are explored with a rich vocabulary. The child’s face & body language are depicted in the swirly, movement-filled illustration. Back matter includes further ways to use this book for #SEL. Good storytime choice

A poem dedicated to the first people of the American continent, illustrated with earthy tones and details. The back matter extends the story, making it a good choice for both storytime and classroom. A QR code that leads to an audio version. Excellent addition to library collections.

The perfect introduction to Autumn for toddlers. There’s even a vocabulary seek and find at the end of the book. The small size will fit tiny hands. Autumnal colours and simple shapes accompany the text. It’s a nice little book!

The illustrations here might seem like the star of the show, and they are truly spectacular, moving across the pages in flying black wings, red eyes, and lovely skies. The text is poetic and informative, accompanied by several pages of crow behaviour that extend the lesson. Stunner!

In the right hands, this could be a wildly successful storytime book. The listener has to supply the sounds in the busy spreads. The book starts slowly, with letters to help with sounds , ramping up to symbols only. The illustrations are detailed, so may best be used with a small group.

Roscoe needs new shoes, but he likes his old puppy slippers, which are soft and so comfy. Ivy puts the new shoes out for Roscoe to see, and he eventually warms to them. Written for neurodivergent children & their parents, it has helpful tips. A non-didactic book that all kids can enjoy.
