For those of you who just came here from my mastodon/mathstodon on the promise of ephemeral stuff such as food and pants: I just had breakfast (cereal, yogurt, and a banana, all mixed together, and a cup of tea) and I’m wearing a skirt.
Just saw an episode of Star Trek: Voyager in which an astronaut named John Mark Kelly was at Mars in 2032. Now I wish actual astronaut Mark Kelly (or Scott Kelly) had a kid by that name. 😃

Ooh, I got feedback on my Feedback! (I got radar on my Radar?) Not sure I’ll be able to retest it on the build they asked me to (I don’t install betas at home) but it’s a sign it could be fixed.

TIL the game I know of as ‘elastics’ is also known as, ‘Chinese jump rope’, ‘French skipping’ and, ‘American ropes’. (It originated in China) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese...

This reminds me of all the countries turkeys are ascribed to in different languages. 🙂

This might be a spoiler, but today’s (31 Oct) Weirdle happens to be the song Joey and I sang at karaoke last night. weirdle.neocities.org The KJ said it was the weirdest love song he’d ever heard.

TL;DR: I made an app to derive a lot of 'lucky' numbers from any text. You can get it on the App Store now, for iOS and macOS. Many years ago I came across Uri Geller's page about how he notices the number 11 a lot and it's somehow a magic number. I didn't read all of it, because it's nonsense, but I was intrigued by the list of 'Names, events and places that add up to 11 letters.' It contains:

It will show you all the ‘magic’ numbers you can get out of any given word or phrase. So you can prove whatever numerological fallacies you like!

Good job Böcker on seizing the moment to advertise your lifts 🤣

I thought I’d be able to get an Apple Card once I had a nonzero number to put in the income field, but alas, I also need a credit history. Oh well.

Holiday Inn Express Geometry

On our road trip across the USA, Joey Marianer and I stayed at many Holiday Inn Express hotels. I noticed they had a lot of geometrical decor. In particular, some intriguing wallpaper, which I will analyse in the second half of the post.

Oh. It turns out trying to play the audio graph of a Swift Chart that has ~30000 values is a bad idea. I quit the app but VoiceOver is still stuck and I can't even turn it off.

I’m doing Japanese on Duolingo, and this lesson is supposed to be teaching me the Japanese names for different years at university, but the Japanese names for them are just numbered, the same as the English names, so what I’m actually learning is the American names for different years at university.

I’ve known these existed for ages, but didn’t see the point of having a stand for my Apple Watch charger until recently, when my charger fell off the narrow end table one too many times. It looks so cute! I think the watch band in the colours of the original Apple logo (but wrong order) adds to it.

Thanks, iOS 26, for screening this call from a weirdo. 😂

(It was actually someone I’d just talked to from a recruiting firm whose name sounds a little like weirdo, I guess)

A while ago I added the possibility to configure Seddit (my text-to-speech-focused hands-free Reddit client for macOS and iOS) with multiple voices so that each user's content could be read in a different voice. Of course, iOS and macOS come with voices that speak a huge variety of different languages, so you could theoretically select, say, a Japanese voice, a French voice, and three English voices, and download Reddit posts and comments in all of those languages.

The new macOS/iOS version of Seddit is out! In this version, if you have voices in multiple languages selected, it will detect the language of the first post or comment by each user and give them a voice that speaks that language. So they’ll be pronounced correctly. apps.apple.com/us/app/seddi...

October is blindness awareness month and you might have noticed that recently I've been talking more about vision in general lately. I'm going to answer some common questions and give you some facts. First, blindness is a spectrum. Only 10% of us see nothing, most have residual/some usable vision

Just submitted a Swift Charts bug FB20491693. Making minimal example projects is a fun puzzle, especially when they show that the bug isn't my fault. 😆 And helped me find a workaround for what is probably quite an edge case.

Yesterday we went to an event with Mary Roach for the second time this year. Her new book, Replaceable You, is about replacing various body parts. At the signing table afterwards, she was giving out little packets of tissues, saying, “I’m a tissue donor”. 😆

I’m just starting writing an app that (among other things) concatenates integers, and obviously has trouble with that when the concatenated values don’t fit in an Int.

Joey said, “I couldn’t BigInt o tell you how to fix that.”

Strong contender for worst pun of the day, but I bet we can do worse.
