After the opening Japan in 1859, the old backwater capital of Kamakura was transformed into an international tourist destination.

This bilingual tourist map from 1912 (Meiji 45) provides a glimpse into which Kamakura sites were seen as most significant, including the Kamakura Daibutsu. 🧵

The trade war Trump should’ve fought (and won) was in 2021. That TPP group of nations was the best chance the world had of avoiding Chinese domination of global trade and trade rules).

The US has a roughly $3.5 Billion trade *surplus* with Columbia (US exporters need Columbian customers more than Columbian exporters need US customers)
Breaking: Trump said he would impose 25% tariffs on Colombian goods, in retaliation for the country's rejection of two U.S. flights carrying migrants
Trump Says Colombia Will Face 25% Tariffs Amid Fight Over Deportation Flights
The retaliatory step followed the Colombian government’s decision to block U.S. planes carrying migrants.

Phones contagious like yawns. See someone check their phone then need to do same. Suddenly group is ignoring each other staring at screens. To fight that, tried this: only 1 of us allowed to be on phone at anytime. Worked great: allowed for needed use but didn’t take away from group human dynamic.

2024 was one of the most unusually intense years of news events in recent Japanese memory, right from day one. So far, 2025 is off to a quieter start, but there’s still much to watch for — including these five things I have my eye on. Free to read:

Anime, M&A and Expo: What to Watch in Japan’s 2025
Foreign investors will be examining all kinds of assets in Asia’s second-largest economy, while it’s expected to be another bumper year for animated hits.

Here’s hoping that this eventually results in a tier of properly edited publications that are able to charge for their superior product.
This is increasingly becoming an issue with academic publications too. Not because editors aren't doing great work, but because companies are far too eager to farm out the editing to AI or to companies that don't do a good job/know the field. Pay good, expert copy editors!
and anecdotally, as a freelancer, I can say that genuinely over half the pieces I wrote last year for publications didn't get edited, by which I mean not even a comma got shifted, because commissioning editors are so overworked, so again - the temptation to go at it alone can be overwhelming

The most moving moment of 2024 was after visiting a mult-million pound D-day Centre at Juno Beach, going down to the actual beach and finding loads of inuksuit spontaneously made by Canadian visitors.

#jikkaing with #kohaku over, we now begging the best few minutes of Japanese TV each year: quiet scenes from temples ushering in the new year across Japan

Is it this simple? Are performers singing live this year just because they can? And until 2 years ago they didn’t because they couldn’t? (Because Johnny’s acts couldn’t actually sing) #kohaku #jikkaing

Holy crap, that was really good. Shiina Ringo! #kohaku #jikkaing

It’s not like it’s ever going to be actually good, but given the impossible task of appealing to various generations, #kohaku seems to have more watchable moments this year (as it is freed from the hegemonic Johnny’s influence?) #jikkaing

Not sure if the inherited infrastructure in JR West was comparatively weak when privatized in 1987 but the regular delays on the main Sanyo line due to minor maintenance problems are *way* worse than in the rest of Japan.

A good example of this is when a lot of pundits heard "abolish the police" a lot on Twitter, and this led them to conclude that "abolish the police" was a common and popular opinion among left-leaning voters, even though it's actually a fringe view that has a very vocal consituency on social media.

3. This makes it appear as though the people with the strongest views also have *the most common* views, even though there isn't actually any reason to believe that's true.
