We can hope the first ring of upzoning pushes the population up so that Burlingame becomes eligible for the second ring.

I meant, the court finding A CITY out of compliance, then any builder's remedy project can refile in THAT CITY.
annepaulson.bsky.social
It's Burlingame. 75 foot buildings (120 dwelling units per acre) allowed inside the green circle. And parcels right next to Caltrain can be 95 feet tall.
annepaulson.bsky.social
Even better if they were six stories. Which is now allowed. 😊
annepaulson.bsky.social
That's good enough. That's a lot of prime real estate.

If the court found the city out of compliance because the low/VL sites allowed 100% non-residential, couldn't any builder's remedy project just re-file? Maybe the city wasn't out of compliance, but if a court says so, it's out of compliance now.

The developer only has to get one building. And there are a lot of SFHs near transit on the peninsula. Mountain View in particular is loaded with targets.

This is awful, why would anyone want their city to be like this:
Hôtel de Sens park in Paris, with three, five and six story buildings surrounding it. The little, sunken park has benches around the edges and flowerbeds in the center. It's a green oasis in the heart of the city.

Buildings, yes, strokes, no.

I recently got back from Paris, where almost all buildings are five or six stories, at least where we were staying. It was amazingly great.

It's an interesting fact that none of those single family houses is presently for sale. Almost as if some investors knew SB 79 might be signed into law.
annepaulson.bsky.social
Sadly, Burlingame is one of the cities where the transit radius is only a quarter mile. But quite a few parcels with one house on them were just upzoned to 100 du/acre, 65 feet tall. Oh no.

Good for you. Hopefully someone sane from the city will look at that and immediately order its removal. In the case of a hazard like that, I'd go to city staff and also immediately go to a City Council member.

I only write "lawsuit waiting to happen" because that's what cities care about. The cable is a death or serious injury waiting to happen. Some helpful soul with wire cutters should remove that hazard before a kid ends up in the hospital or worse.
annepaulson.bsky.social
This is a lawsuit waiting to happen. It's one thing to install a fence, and quite another to install invisible cables just waiting to clothesline preschoolers.

It's amazing how many people fail to connect small parking lots with low prices. Like, do you think grocery stores don't pass on the cost of parking to you?

Trader Joe's Exec1: we'll sell lots of really good stuff at good prices

Exec2: that doesn't sound at all evil. We're a big company, we're supposed to be evil

Founder1: we are going to have the most inadequate, cramped, badly designed parking lots in the fucking world

Founder2: ok that works

If you think e-bike riders should wear helmets, how do you reconcile that with bikeshare? (I have an e-bike, and I wear a helmet, so don't try to persuade me helmets are good.)

[VICTORY ALERT] Governor Newsom has signed SB 79, which will make it legal to build multi-family housing near high quality transit!

Should there be governmental support somehow for family-appropriate housing in cities? I'm leery of that (as I suspect you are) because such policies usually don't work and often have unintended consequences. 3/3
