As Ben pulls up in front of the Ticos’ waterfront residence, Rey stares out of her window, tracing the dark outline of the family’s sailboat that’s anchored to their private dock. Even in the dead of the night, the lake glows, its surface dotted with traces of moonlight and stars, like a fine dusting of diamonds.
“Get home safe, guys!” Rose says cheerfully.
After the pickup turns onto the main road, Ben switches on the radio. She’s thankful for that. The soft strumming of guitar from the Elliot Smith track will fill the gaps. The quiet spaces. Being alone with him is nerve-racking enough as it is—so, hearing her own heart pounding through the silence is the last thing she needs.
Five minutes later, he pulls into her driveway.
“Home alone?”
